Anyone ever have a PS3 give them a message that the system has become too hot and will shut down?

I just had this happen on a super slim I got in 2013 and started using in I think very early 2014 or the very tail end of 2013.

I tried turning the system on a second time after it shut down on it's own the first time. No luck. The same message popped up.

I've been using it laying flat on a wooden table for the last two years or so. But this PS3 has been bad luck from the start.

The controller or rather the charging port on it broke within the first 6 months I was using it. The port was actually too tight for the standard charging cable and I kept having to force the cable into the port.Mad Sony said they would repair it since it was still in warranty, but shipping to them was on MY dime. I opted instead to dump it as-is to somebody from Craigslist or whatever.

So I guess that's where this system is gonna end up too. I don't wanna deal with either trying to fix it or selling it to somebody I know as a fixer upper and have them get pissed cuz they can't figure it out.

Dump it. Look up YLOD on Google. I actually tore mine down and fixed it, but it took a day and I know computer repair (basic). I wouldn't do it again.

Mad I was hoping that it wasn't the actual YLOD. I've only seen it once before on a PS3 I owned. That one was a 60 GB model I grabbed for $40 off some guy who was trying to sell it to a local shop. It worked fine when I bought it but I stored it for about 5-6 months after fully testing it with every kind of game I could throw at it. It played them very well. Mind you, it was a console that was set up to play pirated stuff, since it had firmware 3.55 or something on it. Funny thing is the guy who sold it to me didn't look like he was very technically skilled, so I imagine he had someone else mod it up for them.

In the end I had a buddy dump it to Gamestop during a 100% promo they had on consoles. Even with the YLOD and with having been opened up by my buddy, who tried to redo the thermal paste on it, they gave me around $190 or so.

I already got an 'offer' on this PS3 this morning from Craigslist. They offered me $10 for it after I listed it for $90, hoping someone would offer $50-60 or so. I told the person I'd rather smash it with a hammer. Wink

He lives near me. A couple years ago, he bought five copies of a game on clearance at target closest to me. Bragged about it here then soon found out the trade value wasn't worth a 'flip'. When I called him on it for being a scumbag for buying out the stock, he PM'ed me and told me he would now purposely return them to a target far away from me so I can't get a copy for myself.
Whine more, please.

So you listed a crippled PS3 on Craigslist for 90 bucks and get insulted when someone offers you what it's probably worth?

You're a peach.

It's worth more than $10 to me. I figured somebody who wanted a system to tinker with to try to get it working again would respond, offer me maybe $50-60 for it and I'd take that and be done with it. But I keep forgetting what cheap ass bastards and resellers are viewing CL nowadays. It's probably the one guy who I bump into from time to time at thrifts and the flea markets trying to buy another as-is one to sell on their eBay account. He's bought some stuff from me before, but that was stuff I had paid nearly nil for so I made money on that deal.

I'd sell it on eBay but prices are all over the damn place on them. Plus I don't wanna be bothered shipping it out.

Pretty sure that I have seen functioning slims either used or refurb going for not much more than $100. Asking more than $30 for a broken console is not exactly a fair market price there.

Yeah. I'll admit I'm at a loss for what to actually ask for it. I just know that the MSRP for one with a hard drive is still $220 or so. So I figured half off would be a good starting point and we could negotiate from there.

But as I said, apparently people wanna start at the low, ridiculous end and then maybe work up from there.

If I don't get anymore offers by Sunday I'll take it to the one guy up at the flea market near here. I think they do repairs on consoles. So maybe they can put different thermal paste in it or otherwise fix whatever is wrong with it.

If not I'm sure he'd take it for $50-60 and then sell it himself after trying to fix it. If he doesn't want it though, then I'll take it home and experiment on it myself. Even if I have to do like my one buddy and his family did with their one PC back in the day and use a big window fan or something to keep it cool while using it I'll jury rig it that way for the time being.

I've always priced stuff I was trying to sell on Craigslist for higher than I wanted as a way to start the ball rolling on people negotiating. But lately it's just low ball city on there. You list something for $50, then offer you $5 to start and won't go up much from there.

So many people(including this low baller who responded to my ad) call Craigslist a 'swap meet'. But to me it's just another venue like eBay or Amazon to sell your items on for a decent price WITHOUT paying fees. You just have to run into a reasonable person to sell to. So far that's happened TWICE for me in about 5-7 years of trying to sell stuff on there.

If you're being serious, would you mind telling me what(if anything) you did to fix it. Because I really don't want to get rid of a system that I've only been using for around a year now for next to nothing. If I had the extra cash I'd call Sony and have them fix it or swap it out for me. I'm really starting to regret getting rid of the 160 GB slim model I had since 2011 that I got from Amazon's Warehouse Deals. That thing ran flawlessly. But they gave me over what I paid for it very early in 2014 or so, so I couldn't say no to dumping it back to Amazon.

He probably stopped shaving and dressed like a slob before he tried it again. Or something like that...

If that's the case then I should try it again cuz I fit that description. laugh out loud

You know the funny thing is I saw a video on YouTube showing how to 'fix' this issue and the poster put a heavy vase on the left side of the console and it booted up just fine after that.

Mind you, I imagine it was a video meant to troll other people into trying something absurd like that. But you just never know with electronics. laugh out loud
