Thread Details

I signed up for the amex business gold card and received it in the mail 3 wks ago. Get 75,000 pts if i spend x amount in next few months. They called several times lately leaving messages to call them back. I did and they wanted my business # which I said I would get back to them with. I had understood could be my social security # if I chose to give them that? Today I tried to use the card and it is cancelled. Can you not use your social #? I do have my own business but don't have a business #.

Yes you can use your SSN for your business as sole proprietor. Your card might have been cancelled since you were dodging AMEX questions.

but how were they supposed to guess that you wanted to use it as a sole proprietor business? better safe than sorry for them

Probably too late, but call anyhow as nothing worse can happen. Has nothing to do with your SSN, instead the fact that you answered the phone but refused to give your business phone probably tripped a red flag for potential fraud. From their perspective, this is very suspicious.

you have nothing to lose if you call for reconsideration. hopefully, you get a cooperative upper level manager. maybe it'll work if you tell them you were not sure of the business number you were asked whether it was business phone or ITIN? just be ready with your business documents that they may ask and see what they say.

sad to say though, they've already done HP on your credit report for this application. but I may be wrong since this is a business CC. I also got this targetted offer and have been sitting on it for weeks now, hoping for a higher offer knowing I can only get this once in a lifetime.

you can get a business card more than once in a lifetime. I think you have to wait a year after cancelling.

How did you get approved in the first place if you did not send them your SSN\EIN. I never heard of a business card where they do not ask for one or both prior to approval.

OP did send SS# when applied for the card
"they must already have my ssn from when i applied for the card tho"

My Amex business used my wifes EIN and my SS. They pulled the "member since year" from my personal account

so I called them back and they just said that the computer had automatically temporarily closed the account until they heard back from me. So I just said OK, what do you need? Pretty much knowing where we were headed. She said they just needed my tax id number. I said that it was a sole proprietorship and they had my social security number. She said ok well let me change the way that is worded on your card since for some reason it says INC. Bottom line, I can't use this card but they will be replacing it with another and it will remain the same account number. Just handled strangely. I wouldn't have filled the application out with anything other than sole proprietor unless for some reason they had pre-filled it, which I can't recall but doubt. It appeared as tho the account was closed and I wasn't going to go thru all that again for 75,000 pt. much as I love them.
