I have a pre widi miracast laptop and would like the best solution to stream to my vizio smart tv. I also have a roku. Ive use plex in the past, but would like to know if there is something better out there. Any info on wireless hdmi or other alternatives is appreciated.

I use plex and a roku/chromecast. For me its a great solution.

To do you wireless HDMI assuming your TV is capable at a minimum you would need a new wifi card in your laptop. Free vs $$. What are your difficulties or problems? I am assuming these are videos you have on your local PC in various formats.

I think the better question to ask is why you don't like Plex? Most people setup Plex or Kodi and then call it a day.

There are wireless HDMI options but they aren't cheap. Alternatives aren't really going to cut it if you find fault with Plex.

What do you mean "code" properly? Do you mean your devices are being forced to transcode? Plex on the Roku should support your codecs natively avoiding the need to transcode.

Plex and Kodi are the only tools with user interfaces at all. If you don't use one or the other you will have no user interface.

I'd give Kodi a whirl and see if you like it better than Plex, it also has changeable skins.

If necessary, transcoding usually happens on the server not the client.

Options:
-Keep using plex (this would be my choice)
-Get a usb miracast/widi adapter
-Assuming adequate antennas, replace the wireless card in your laptop with one that supports miracast/widi (not always possible due to the aforementioned antennas).
