It is higher resolution than the standard 27" monitor (typically 2560x1440). They also have a 30" version for $400 [tigerdirect.com].

On a related note, I've always wondered how these odd-resolution monitors come about. In an office of ~30 1920*1200 Samsungs, I have a 2048*1152 2343BW.

Anyways, the math on this panel comes out to ~122DPI, quite a bit denser than the 108DPI of 1440p 27" monitors, so you might want this a bit closer to your face if you don't want to scale up the UI.

pretty sure the native resolution is actually 2560 x 1440 and the higher resolution is for the input resolution, not the screen resolution
