Heads up! American Express Amex rebate card fees acrue early!

Just a warning to anyone else who has a dozen Amex rebate cards laying around like I did...

The terms & conditions shipped with our cards all say 5 months until a $2/month fee applies. The full terms page seems to indicate that 5 months is from the date the card is received, but I have always went by the date shown as the ship/activation date on 4myrebate shows for the cards.

I had 3 cards showing a ship/activate date of 5/4 , received 5/11. I went to use the cards and discovered all 3 of them had been charged a $2 fee, 5 days before what should have been 5 months from the activation date, or 12 days if you go by the receive date.

I contacted Amex and was transferred to someone claiming to be a supervisor. They indicate their terms and conditions say "4 months", despite me holding a card and a terms sheet that says 5. They say they can charge fees anytime between the 4th and 5th month. I told them I can scan a card and a terms sheet that says it is, in fact, 5 months, but they say they do not accept email or fax submissions from customers and are not interested in seeing it, since their system says 4 months.

Mad Absolutely furious! These used to be 6 months, then lowered to 5, and now they're charging the fee any blasted time they want! Warning to anyone else that has these, use them as soon as you get them!

Thinking about filing a complaint with the BBB or SCC, but I'm not certain where to start as far as what state their "rewards card" division works out of.

These rebates with AMEX cards are becoming more of a pain as time goes on. When Costco quits taking AMEX next year, my main option for using these will be gone......

I agree it is pretty shady. But my advice instead of waiting until last few days, just use them much earlier to avoid such pain. It is dead money anyway not collecting interest by not using the cards. -Smilie

That's always the goal, however, if you have a lot of them they like to save them up and bundle 4-5 in the same envelope.

Also, as a result of the BBB complaint, they did eventually refund the charges but called it a "courtesy" rather than admitting any wrongdoing or deceptive practices.
