This is tempting for the price. Any input on airline and accessibility/security for Americans? I'm no stranger to travel abroad, but closest I stayed in Africa was a night in a Cairo hotel over 20yrs ago.

Delta is probably my least favorite airline to fly internationally but at this price it would be tempting, were I in Houston. As for visiting Johannesburg and SA in general. It's pretty much "Africa for beginners" - Great exchange rate right now, English as the primary language, decent roads to drive on. Use JNB as a home base and go on a safari, down to CPT, the wine route, etc. Be sensible and you'll be just fine - it's not like there's a boogeyman around each corner but it's also far from Mayberry.
