u2715H + Studio 540 problems

SlickRook 144 35 October 8, 2015 at 07:30 AM
Recently picked up u2715h to take advantage of the higher resolution. I purchased it through dell chat and was told that my studio 540 and radeon 4600 would be able to handle the new monitor/resolution. They were wrong. I can't find a cable that will support the 2560x1440 resolution.

I'm stuck with upgrading my GPU and was hoping someone could shine some light on which card I should get. I don't game and will mainly use this new monitor for work and photo editing.

What outputs do you have on your PC for graphics?

Did you try a displayport cable? Better yet, does the card even have a displayport port?

If you have the outputs you might need a driver update to enable the higher resolutions.

The u2715h has hdmi, display port and mini display port.
My current video card (Radeon HD 4600) only has two dvi ports on it.

Ok so potentially DVI to HDMI would work if the card can output at a high enough resolution. Any card with displayport should work if you need to upgrade.

What a PITA. Here [hp.com] is the spec sheet for the card you linked to on Amazon, doesn't look good. There's a note that it will only support 2560x1600 if you use the dual link DVI. But from what I can tell all 4600 variants already have dual link DVI. So you could try a dual link DVI to HDMI cable on your existing card and hope it works. Otherwise I have yet to find another card that has displayport and supports 1440 in that price range.

EDIT: Only other cards that cheap were FirePros w/ Displayport on ebay, some new, some refurbs, some used.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Note:There are two 4650 radeon cards, one is the one with DVI and HDMI, the other has 2 DP ports and 1 DVI port. The specs for the latter is here [hp.com].

I'm hoping the amazon one is with DPort, being that it says that in the title.

Super hesitant about trying any cable, as I've heard you have to 'trick' the comp into 2560x1440 resolution when trying to go over HDMI.

Make sure you use a Dual Link DVI cable. Regular DVI cables are only good up to ~1920x1200. This wiki has a chart that tells you how to figure out what you currently have by the pins: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dig..._Interface

No dvi on the u25715h. I'm probably gonna just pick up this card [ebay.com] and use the DP.

Sorry, completely missread your post, or mixed it in with the talk above about DVI. That seems like it ought to solve your problems.

You'd have to do dual link DVI to HDMI. Anyway I can't find a spec sheet for that card, but I'm sure it will be fine. I would just do a spec comparison between that and the Firepros, V3800/V3900/V4800 since they all seem to be a similar price, might as well get the best bank for your buck.
