Swap Phone Numbers AT&T Family Plan

ByMinotti 64 10 October 12, 2015 at 08:17 PM
I have one line on my AT&T Family Plan with unlimited data and I would really like my phone number on that line. I have talked to AT&T and they said I can't swap numbers within my family plan. Is there any way to get my number on that phone line? I have thought maybe I could port the number out to a different service and then port it back to the line with unlimited data. The one problem is it's still in a contract until September 2016 and I do not want to pay any early termination fees. If anyone has done this before or has any other ideas that would be great. Thanks!

if you port out, you won't be able to port in to the unlimited plan again, i.e. you'll lose it.

Last I checked AT&T should have no problem swapping your phone numbers around. They can't *PORT* from AT&T to AT&T, but if its all in the same family plan there shouldn't be any problem.

That being said I've been out of the industry for a few years so some things may have possibly changed, but i CAN'T see why they'd have done that. Maybe this is AT&T's way of pushing you off your unlimited plan?

Yeah this isn't something they CAN'T do. It's something they WON'T do.

They do not want you to have that unlimited data plan. They would prefer you left AT&T entirely than continue to give you the unlimited data plan. But they can't just cancel it. So they aren't going to do anything to make it easy for you to keep it.

What you can do, and you'll hate this but it'll work, is swap the sim cards between the two phones. You keep your phone but the unlimited number is now on your device and not the other family member's. The downside is that you have to switch your phone number to do that and tell all your friends. That's a downer, but it's not as bad as moving to a new number entirely because at least people who have your old number will know you and can give people your new number.
