Laptop or Surface Pro for a college student?

Looking at getting a second laptop or tablet for my second college student. Is it worth getting a Surface Pro (fairly expensive) or a laptop? For what I'm sinking into the Surface, I could get a really nice laptop for him.

I hate to get swept up in the allure of a new shiny, knowing I will have to buy a keyboard, Office software, etc for the Surface, while I can leverage my work's Home Use policy for Office on a laptop.

The Surface Pro 3 will be dropping in price and there's not much difference except in the high end versions of the Surface Pro 4. The new pen and the new keyboard are backwards compatible to Surface Pro 3.

Depending on their preferences the Surface could be very useful with the pen however the Surface is a hybrid and also depending on their usage it may not suit their needs. The surface is not a traditional laptop and the keyboard may not be particularly well suited for the amount of typing that a college student does.

I'd talk to them about what they would prefer and how they're likely to use whatever they're going to get first.

If they're not going to use touch screen or the pen often that would defeat the purpose of the surface entirely. Additionally if they will use whatever they get on their lap then the surface is not for them.
