Freedompoppers may be lamenting the sunset of WIMAX and the gimpy upgrade deals they're being offered. Wondering what other options for hotspots there might be other than the prior slickdeal now supposedly expired, I Googled "Netgear hotspot Sprint", and lo and behold, in the Google shopping choices box, was the Netgear Mingle, 29.99, with Freedompop as the seller. Not sure how all that Google tracking voodoo happens or if everyone will see the same deal. Checked the link in the wiki of the expired deal posted last week and it still shows 59.99.

The Google shopping link eventually points here:
https://www.freedompop.com/offer/...te-hotspot
Not sure if stripping out all the extra coding changes anything but entered on a separate browser the price shows the same. If you sign into a new email it shows as 29.99 with free activation, on an existing FP acct it shows as free with 29.99 activation.
Free shipping. When done with checkout if offered a Hydro Icon for $30 more. I passed, wanting to try one of the Ringplus options instead to see if Sprint cellular voice really is any better than VOIP.

THE CATCH: with FP there always is one, and in this case it is a free FP Premier trial, no way to deactivate on the site so remember to kill it before your free month is up, and check your account settings after to make sure it is good and done, or else be ready to pay 8.33 per month ($25 every 3 months) for that bundle of services.

There will be the inevitable "FP is a scam!" trolls, but for the careful (keeping usage below quota) and the diligent (checking your CC statements for stray charges, which you should anyway, given rampant ID theft these days), you will get a lot of free service, and only occasional overage charges when you do something stupid like "update all apps" on your phone with the hotspot still on - your phone will not automatically switch from your hotspot to your home wifi just because you are home, duh!

If past patterns hold, they will jack the price once a good number of signups happen at this price. Good luck, and enjoy!

So how do you kill the premier trial? You have to call? No way to do it on the site, period?

If you go the free route, it's always 500mb base data, with a maximum additional 500mb (plus any borrowed data, again 500mb max) added per month if you have at least 10 freedom friends added to your account.

It's been a while since I used Freedompop. Is there a way to ensure that you're never charged for going over 500MB/mo? Is some kind of auto-top-up enabled by default, and can it be disabled?

I'm thinking of getting this for a family friend who doesn't have internet service, but needs it occasionally to download books on her tablet. According to Sprint's coverage tracker, she lives on the edge of Sprint Spark (Fair) and Sprint 4G LTE (Best) areas. Does this hotspot support both?

Turn off auto-top-up. Data will shut off 1-3 hours after getting within 100mb of the account limit. If you go over the limit before the shutoff, you pay for what you use, simple as that.

Have the friend get an LTE antenna setup on the roof, and connect to the port on the Mingle. Point antenna at the nearest tower (can find Sprint tower locations online). Can easily go from 1 to 5 bars with the right setup. I did something similar--total investment $70 (not counting hotspot).

how to "upgrade" current wimax hotspot, instead of create a new account? since my current wimax one already has 1gb. don't want to add friends again.

Thanks for the great info. The antenna thing is definitely not going to happen, unless the data is unusably slow. It's just for book downloads after all! :-P She really should have got a Kindle with 3G data.

I'ved used freedompop for years, me and family have multiple devices, and love their service. Sometimes its spotty, and sometimes your device fails, but at this price, and the amount of use I've gotten, I picked up another 2 units.

Got one thanks! Great item for a backup internet device. My internet likes to die every 1-2 months for an hour to a few hours.

Despite it being "free", I see no way to disable the 24.95 / quarter fee, and their website makes me feel extremely uneasy about their product, with lots of popups and things that remind me of infomercial guys techniques.

I imagine the answer is -- contact FreedomPop support [freedompop.com].

The rep seems to imply that all the paid services can be cancelled without giving up the free service.

The OP just mistated the premier service. The deal has always been that you get it one month for free. Anytime during that month, you can go to the website, log into your account, and disable the premier service. I just looked at the registration page for this deal and it still clearly states that on the right side. It's just a way to try to get your business.
Anyway, $10 cheaper than what I paid last week, so I'd jump on it if I hadn't already purchased. Still waiting for a shipping confirmation though...
Thanks OP. TU!
