When I was given the opportunity to Review this neat Fire truck toy from Mota I got excited because I knew my nephews would love it. Although, after receiving this item I was rather disappointed. Mota usually has top quality products so this one caught me off guard.
My initial impression was that the toy truck felt somewhat cheaply made, definitely not the quality I expected from a $25 toy. The batteries aren't included so I grabbed 3 AA and opened up the battery compartment. The battery cover had a nice picture of a safety screw but no screw, not even a hole for said screw- not a good thing for a toy aimed at 3+ kids.
The truck has no push buttons just a simple on off switch. I turned the switch to the on position and all the nice LEDs started flashing. My attention soon turned to the blaring siren that never turned off, annoying is an understatement. I then noticed that the "Bump & Go" wheels did not turn. On a good note, the Fire hose did actually shoot water out about 10 feet.
I removed a few screws from the bottom and opened up the toy to see if I couldn't see the problem. Sure enough, one of the wires to the wheel motor was not even connected. Upon further inspection I noticed some absolutely horrible soldering job on the controller board; this is definitely not the quality of work I would expect to see.
After fixing the soldering issues, I put everything back together. Turned the switch to "On" and sure enough the truck started driving around, Great! Although, the siren did stop working (all the wires were still connected) - But I see this as a plus!
I have to say that I have always felt like Mota had quality products and I can only hope that I was given a Pre-Production unit to review. Looking past the quality control issues, some improvement is needed in a few areas: Limit the siren to a few seconds; the constant drive wheels are annoying too; Put the LED power on a separate switch so the lights can stay on while the truck isn't moving so you can play with the nifty fire hose!
