Online Appliance and HVACR help for SD members

BikerEric 1,607 May 10, 2008 at 07:37 PM
I will do my best to help any and all in the repair or diagnostic of any appliance.
My expertise comes from 30 years of doing the work and 20 plus of running and owning an appliance and HVACR company.
All I ask of you is to follow these rules and suggestions:

Remember to include your model and serial numbers in your post!

I can't tell you how many times loungers ask me for help repairing their appliance and they either give me a bad model number or none at all. Without a valid model number, I can't look up diagrams or find out anything about your appliance. So, here are:

the Ten Commandments for BikerEric's Online Appliance Help

1. Ye shall read the model number directly off the manufacturer's tag affixed to the appliance., not from the owners guide!

2. Ye shall use these diagrams to help you locate the manufacturer's tag if you are having trouble.

Window Air Conditioners
[partselect.com]
Dishwashers [partselect.com]
Dryer [partselect.com]
Freezer [partselect.com]
Stove or oven [partselect.com]
Refrigerators [partselect.com]
Washing Machine [partselect.com]
Trash Compactor [partselect.com]

3. Ye shall speak of the Brand Name

4. Ye shall mention if the appliance is electric or gas (natural or LPG [propane])

5. Ye shall speak of the configuration of the offending machine ie.side by side, front load

6. Ye shall speak precisely of the problem. not just it's broke , it doesn't work

7. Ye shall understand that I may ask for pictures if possible

8. Ye shall know and understand that I am doing this on line, So I may ask you to do a check on something. I have no idea how handy you are or what your abilities are, So you are doing these checks on your own responsibility. If you feel that it is beyond your ability , PLEASE let me know! BikerEric nor SlickDeals assumes any responsibility for your aptitude or abilities

9. Ye shall not blame BE if his diagnostics might be not be correct

10. Ye shall offer up thy praises in the form of reps or better yet as a donation to a local charity

11. Ye shall keep this tread "chit-chat" free and on topic

BikerEric's Online Guide to buying or replacing Major Appliances and HVACR

Please understand that I am very opinionated about brands and manufacturers . My opinions come my experience on working on these units and my dealing with the manufacturers. I scan the newspaper ads weekly to see who has the best price for the best products! I am not a pricing service. I do not work for or have any support from the manufacturers or from the dealers!

1 Ye shall explain what appliance you are replacing

2 Ye shall explain in detail what you would like to buy or purchase

3 Ye shall understand that my questions to you ( while seemingly personal) are to help you realize whether an appliance will work for you.

Ahem!

figured i'd search before i posted about the goodman units. pure crap in my opinion (stuck with them because that's what my house came with when it was built). i've had 3 coils replaced in the upstairs unit in less than 5 years *all under warranty* and almost had a coil replaced downstairs until i was told that only 2lbs of freon leaked in 5 years. told him to fill'er up and move on.

Need help putting a belt in a Kenmoore washer Model #11049182990. I'm guessing its a belt since it doesn't agitate and there was a burning rubber smell prior to it quitting. I would absolutely love a repair manual, but have no idea where to get one cheap or free.

Hang on.. don't go away.... someone will surely have the answer in a minute.......

Just kidding... I think you want to make your own thread, rather than bury it in this old thread about anti virus and malware.

I have a Superior BCF-3885 wood fireplace with the original FAK-1500 blower. The blower spins up and works fine, I can feel the airflow if I reach my hand behind it but I get very very low airflow out of the vents above the fireplace where the heat is supposed to be blown out of.

Is this just a bad blower design or could something else be causing this? I don't think the flow path is obstructed.

I purchased a DeLonghi dehumidifier (Model DD50PC) because it is the only model that has a pump feature - it runs into a drain line. I keep it clean and was very happy with it for the first few months. Then I noticed the fan ran (it sounded like it was on) but the humidity level seemed higher than it should be. So I set it for a lower humidity level, but no improvement. Switched over to the 'dump into the bucket' option only to find that it wasn't removing humidity from the air. (I had purchased a similar model 2 years earlier that has the same problem.) The nearest service center is in another state (approximately a 2 1/2 hour drive + $20 tolls each direction). I'm guessing the refrigeration system may have a leak. At $250 for the unit, I hate to keep replacing them. Any ideas?

Kenmore HE3 front load washing machine, about 10 years old.

Isn't draining. Shows suds and drain issue code.... they're related. Don't see any suds and think that's a timed error on the code.

It doesn't drain into the stack, but will drain with pressure into a bucket if I drop the hose to floor level. There's also a slight ticking sound from within the drain pump.

I verified the drain hose wasn't clogged by removing it and running a garden hose through it. On the internal section, I removed the hose from the pump and poured water into it from the drain end. Flowed fine. The impeller isn't broken, and there's a tad of pressure on it when I tried rotating the impeller for inspection through the drain hole. I also cleaned out the manual clean filter housing, found some coins in there.

I don't understand why it would pump with the drain hose at floor level but not at drain stack level.

Suggestions?

updated: I guess the pump simply didn't have enough ummph. A replacement fixed all it's ails.

Maytag Washer Model MAV-4 (MAV6000AWW) making horrible screeching sound during spin cycle. We purchased the unit new about 12 years ago. Please advise if this sounds like just a bearing that I can replace myself (not requiring any special tools) or if it would be best handled by a service technician. I can usually handle basic repairs but have never worked on a washer before. Thanks

LG Washer WM1812cw . Machine keeps cutting off mid cycle. Appears to be somewhere around/at the spin cycle. No error codes, just turns off. The clothes are sitting in water when it happens. It does not appear to be happening in the first cleaning cycle- the water doesnt appear soapy.

Im thinking maybe the pump is bad. Read online advice to disconnect the pump and run a cycle- see if the same errors happen (maybe with an error code this time).

Thoughts? Doesnt look like there is any activity here anymore, unfortunately.

Electric dryer works fine, except I have to turn it off manually.

Kenmore 110.66642500 (Really Whirlpool)
TYPE: DWJR-ELE-2406028-FM54

I believe that the dryer timer is not working, but the part is around $100, and for a $300 dryer, I have to wonder if the part can be repaired, or something. It seems to spin freely. Quite frankly the friend who owns this dryer is inclined to just leave it as is and just manually shut off the dryer, but if there is a cheap enough fix, it might be worth a shot unless I can potentially break the dryer timer. I understand that they have small electric motors that run them and I wonder if it's bad or has some cheap plastic gears that are stripped, or something like that. If it matters, the dryer timer part number is 8299779

I recently put a fridge, washer, and dryer into a storage place. Fridge and dryer are about 10 years old, washer is 3 years old. Is there any any issue with storing these for a couple years? Anything to be aware of?

Take the doors off the fridge (or face a mold attack, and I think it's required by law anyways) and keep the washer from freezing it's drain. Why not get something more energy efficient when you'll need it?

Whatever came of the OP?
