When's the best time to buy a higher-end lawn mower?

My old Honda is starting to finally see it's last days. I bought a Briggs and Stratton Brute mower last year thinking it would replace the Honda--but it was absolute junk. Lesson learned.

So, I'm in the market for something higher end ($600~$1000 push mower)---something high-end residential, or entry-level prograde (Toro, Honda, etc.).

When is the best time of year to visit dealers for closeout models to save a few bucks? Now? Winter? Spring?

Also, is it worth buying used commercial equipment?

Thanks in advance! hug

You should be able to check out their ratings for free at your local library.

Depends on your location but, for most areas that have "winter" it's getting close to that time. Mowing season will soon be over, and dealers will want to move old inventory before new year models hit the floor next spring.

This is also the time of the year when commercial guys will be making changes to their fleet so, good used mowers should be filling up Craigslist shortly (it's already started here in western KY). Used commercial equipment really depends on who owned it. A lot of commercial guys are great about servicing equipment and keeping it in good working condition as their lively head depends on their equipment. However, commercial guys use equipment hard; some abuse equipment and others just use them a lot in a short period of time. If you don't know enough about small engines to be able to look at one and assess it's condition; I would steer clear. If you do have a little knowledge, there are great deals to be had on great equipment.

I bought a 48" walk behind mower earlier this year with less than 2 hours on it from a commercial guy who ended up not using it for less than half of what it was new!
