Thread Details

Hi,

We are planning to travel to Barcelona, Spain, then Paris around June 2016. What's the best way to book for flight? Have been looking at various sites but the price is roughly 1200 plus. We don't mind stop over to take advantage of any good deal. Searched the forum and there were deals from delta in the sub $700 range. Appreciate any thoughts

Stan

Greetings and welcome to the Travel Forum. Without knowing your specific departure city, tough to give you specifics, but here are some general tips. Because you have multiple stop trip, you will be hard pressed to find any "easy" deals as you would have to either:

A) find a specific airline that flies this route and allows for a stopover;
B) find an open jaw ticket for US -> Barcelona and Paris -> US legs, and a second separate ticket for Barcelona-> Paris or;
C) break it up into 3 flights - US -> Barcelona, Barcelona -> Paris, Paris -> US

Some details below, but to summarize, I think option B is your best choice and you may have much better success if you reorder your trip to US->Paris-->Barcelona instead of US-->Barcelona-->Paris:

For option A, try https://matrix.itasoftware.com/. Go to Book Flight option and click the "Advanced Routing Codes" link - this will let you book a flight from US --> Paris with Barcelona as a required in-between destination. Please note: this A) does not guarantee any airline will run this route (which, unfortunately, highly likely even from large US metro cities) or B) that the airline will allow for a stopover. You will have to check the individual airline to see if they will - in general, US airlines will not, but European airlines will for a small charge. In other words, you buy 1 round-trip ticket from US->Paris-> US that stops in Barcelona on the way but you can delay the Barcelona--> Paris leg by 1-7 days,

For option B, try www.kayak.com [kayak.com] or https://matrix.itasoftware.com/ (again). Both let you check prices on open-jaw flights that fly into city A and depart from city B.

For the Barcelona->Paris leg, your best bet is a European based airline. Aer Lingus, British Air, Iberia and Lufthansa all are good options - you can also go for a discount airline like WOW or RyanAir.

Option C is not recommended as 1 way international tickets are almost always just as expensive as a round-trip. That is why open-jaw is a better option - you just need to get the Barcelona-Paris leg set up.

In the end, be prepared that because of the multi-city trip and the June high season, you most likely will not get much better than $1,000/person. The Delta deals were for single-city destinations.

Some final random tips:

- Do not fly British Air as the fuel surcharge for flying through Heathrow is outrageous. Just filter them out of your search results

- You can check out theflightdeal.com and its sister site faredealalert.com - they show good flight prices from various major US cities. Again, the challenge is 99% of these are for single city, not multi-city, trips.

- Be aware that in Paris, US flights come into/out of Charles de Gaulle while your Barcelona leg will most likely be at Orlys. Shouldn't be an issue if you staying over in Paris, but just in case.... This is also a reason why Option A may not work as there is an airport change for flights coming from US

Good luck - let us know if we can provide any other humble advice

BTW, if you are going to Paris and aren't already familiar with the many many gastronomic options there, Amazon currently has Kindle version of Patricia Wells' Good Lover's Guide to Paris for $2.99

Another option since you're still 8 months out would be to sign up for a few credit/charge card offers with large (50k or so) sign up bonuses... then you could potentially use reward flights and pay very little at all for your travel- potentially even upgrading to business class which is pretty nice for longer flights.

Extra bonus- booking 1-way doesn't cost any more this way, so you could easily book as per option C described and not hurt yourself... Only downside is you'd need to be a little flexible on your precise travel dates as availability may be spotty on any given day

(another option to connect between the two european cities BTW is the high speed train... it'll eat a couple more hours than flying will, but the views will be nice and you'll avoid any cost/hassle of getting to/from the airport 2 more times and avoiding airport security once)

You'd need to poke around as to which airline rewards program would work best with your cities... until recently I might have said Avios, because you could use them on Iberia without the crazy fuel surcharges for Barcelona, and Aer Lingus without crazy fuel charges for Paris...(as an example we recently flew business class R/T from US to Paris for 59000 total miles and about $250 in taxes per person- for tickets that cost $2500 if you paid cash) but given the changes to the program in the last year that might not be your best option anymore.

Try checking on flights to London or Amsterdam, from there you can get the train or take one of the European budget airlines like EasyJet or FlyeBE. Or if you can get a cheap flight to Seattle, check the prices on Icelandair.
