$219.99 before $20 MIR

The R9 290 normally retails for around $300, even on sale not less than $250 so $50-100 savings.

This card is slightly inferior to the Nvidia GTX 970 by maybe 10-15% and doesn't support DX12.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

The opening post is incorrect.

This card is DX 12 compatible.

It is also faster running DX 12 than the 970 at 4K resolution because it actually has 4 GB of full-speed VRAM unlike the 970 which only has 3.5 GB of VRAM that runs at a normal speed. It also has a 512-bit bus unlike the 970.

This card does not support HDMI 2.0, and while it can do 4k 60hz, it can only do it over DisplayPort, but NOT over HDMI.

I always thought the 290 and 290 x were dx12 thanks for putting that in the post. probably doesn't matter much at this price point but makes me think I should keep waiting for a 3xx deal I like...

I don't know for sure that it doesn't, but in the description on Newegg it says

Quote :
MICROSOFT DIRECTX 11.2 SUPPORT
So I don't know, YMMV?

Along those lines, the MSI R9 290 Gaming I used to have was a nice two fan card. No deals on those anytime recently that I remember though. Keep an eye on Newegg in the couple weeks before BF and between BF and Christmas though for cashback + free game (usually sell on eBay) + coupons. That's when I've found the best deals on cards apart from right after release of a new model.

So I already have this car - bought in April 2015... any idea to determine if my card is identical to this one (for Crossfire)? I'd assume any slight difference would result in issues, right?

No issues.. r9 290 can crossfire with any other 290.. it can even crossfire with a 290x but that comes with it's own caveats..

The r9 290 is a directx 12 card. The newegg information is incorrect. Now that card has a stock cooler. So its a little loud. But those cards are good for small cases. Since it exhausts the air out the back. Instead of inside the case, which heats up other parts of the computer (cpu, mb, hard drives). This cause the other fans in the system to work faster/louder to get rid of the extra heat.

But 1 fan is going to be running faster/louder than other options with 2 or 3 fans. But unless your gaming all the time this will not be much of a factor.

2x this or 1x GTX 980?

To run GTA V and SC II LotV @ 1080p and near max resolution.

You could run a single card setup on 600-650w without much effort.

I ran that card with an AMD FX-8350 and a 550watt power supply under load with no issues - no overclocking on both GPU and CPU though - may need 650watt if you plan on overclocking
