I'm sorry to ask this, but it's a genuine question - new to gaming XBOX or PS?

Thread Details

Hi, I'm 31 old guy, looking to get into gaming w/ my two sons. One of them may still be too young, he's only 4, but the other one is getting it, we tried in stores - he is 7. I only played games on a PC, but I know that a console is much better approach.
Which one should I go with? I read a lot of different blogs, and it's always a split. Most of the time at least. For my situation, which one do you think is better? I know, it's hard to answer, but I want to find someone w/ kids. Which console has more games for kids, which console has more controllers so you can play sports games, like tennis maybe, etc?
Once I decide I'm going to wait for a deal and treat us w/ a new console for Christmas.
Thanks a lot!

I think when it comes to kids, Xbox's Kinect provides an advantage as it opens the door to a whole lot of kid-friendly games that will keep them moving too.

Not kids but my partner is new to video game. She can't really play all those relatively complex games but likes those Kinect motion games very much (dancing, sports, music, etc.). Playing, having fun, and getting some exercise at the same time. If you want some decent exercise, try Xbox fitness. It has a great lineup of exercise programs, ranging from casual to hardcore, most of which are free with Xbox gold subscription.

For the 7 year old I'd say Wii or Xbox One (for Kinect) but ps4 would be fine too.

My soon to be four year old absolutely loves abcmouse.com and Just Dance Kids, which I just stream youtube to my console so we can dance together laugh out loud She pretty much dislikes everything else.

For the four year old I highly recommend abcmouse.com. For the 7 year old, he/she will probably like anything/everything so go with what YOU prefer.

Thanks for awesome suggestions. I haven't thought of kinect. I'm doing my research on it now. I also like the fact that Xbox can act as an entertainment hub, too...

If they want a newer system (and you do too), get the PS4. Much better games and the camera sensor is a lot cheaper. If you don't mind older games, the PS3 and Xbox 360 will have a huge library of cheap new and used games for $20 or less. The 360 Kinect sensor is decent for kids, many used places sell them under $100. If you don't care for the camera then the 2 systems are pretty even. The PS3 advantage is free online gaming, the 360 charges a yearly subscription. The PS4 and Xbox One both charge for online play.

This is a rather large useful function in the Xbox One. Unless you are playing a game on it, the PS4 is no better than a tabletop heater. There isn't even a decent remote out for it yet and most of the media functions for it are years behind what they should be. It currently does even less than what the PS3 did, and that thing wasn't exactly an amazing media center to begin with.

The Xbox One does a great job of passing other media devices through it giving you a greater range of control. Changing channels using voice controls is nifty, even if you turn it off after a couple of tries.

Games are just about even for both platforms. Aside from exclusives like Bloodborne, Halo, Gran Turismo, forza and a few others they are the same system.

I notice we are leaving all Nintendo products out of this discussion. That is mostly up to what games you want your kids to be playing. Most games this gen are shooter and action heavy. If you can't find games you are comfortable with your kids playing then you may need to look at Nintendos offerings.

To avoid any console war conversation here I will come out and say that I own a PS4, even with all the downsides I listed, and I owned all the previous gen consoles.

I don't really agree with this, I've watched a bunch of YouTube/Netflix on my PS4... my tabletop heater isn't much good for that, it only plays Crackle, and who cares about anything on Crackle?

But I do use my PS3 extensively for media stuff still, since I've got the remote for it and all.

Can ps4 play 3d blu-ray now? I've always been using my Xbox one for 3d blu-ray playback but want to give my ps4 some use. It has been sitting there collecting dust since I was done with the latest infamous game. There haven't been any good exclusives on ps4 and I am not that into Japanese games any more.

False. There's been Bloodborne.

That one is way too hardcore for me. I don't appreciate overly difficult games like that.

I'd recommend the xbox one. As it's more of an entertainment center and the kinect as others have mentioned is nice. My family uses it alot to skype with grandparents, the camera on it is VERy nice.

I absolutely hate all things Apple so it really pains me to admit this, but after using both skype and facetime frequently, the difference in quality between the two is staggering. I mean, I don't know what secret sauce Apple has baked into their video codecs, but they are orders of magnitude more efficient than Microsoft's. It's to the point now where I'm actually looking into getting an ipad vomit or apple tv so we can facetime with a larger display.

Achievements are not for the meek, it is better to forfeit inheritance of the earth so that the mighty may look upon my gamerscore, and despair. Achievements are for men who dream; men who dare; men who achieve! Men who carve out entire galaxies with nothing more than nimble cheetos-dusted fingers and their wits, and in our leisurely twilight days we shall sit by softly flickering fires with our descendants recounting the tales of these unimaginable glories.

The Kinect Skype experience is neat because it is more of an inclusive event for multiple people. Rather than making selfie/groupie calls...you are free to move around more. I'd have to imagine that experience would be much better for the kids, as they can show G-ma/G-pa exactly how the truck zooms around laugh out loud You could get the same thing if you mounted the tablet on a table somewhere, but the screen would be too tiny as a good 'playing' distance.

but Facetime/Skype...I'd have to guess the hardware limits greatly help? But I've never thought Skype looked good, back in the day we used Yahoo! Messenger. But I don't remember the details around it, but at some point we used Skype for a while because it was doing something way better than Yahoo (might have been something due to being international).

Also, Skype was designed to go device to device, so no need to work through a centralized server. Could have been a reason to limit the quality. From what I've read that plan kept costs down and also greatly added to user security. I remember reading the NSA threw a fit about it... But I believe that has changed because users also demand that they get a sync'd experience no matter what device they are using (so notifications on tablets, phones, and PCs that sync).
