Any use of Freedompop Photon Hotspot after upgraded to LTE?

thehighroller 486 30 November 6, 2015 at 08:04 PM
I joined the promotion for a free Photon 4G device from Freedompop, and it seems that the network is upgrading from 4G to LTE, and the device stopped working. I am wondering if there is any other use, mod, etc, of this device? or do I just throw it away which seems to be a waste.

I logged into the device, and it works like a little router with port forwarding feature.

Any suggestion?

Thanks.

BOTTOM LINE
If you're in the coverage area, the Freedom Spot Photon is a hotspot from FreedomPop that gets you online for free. You'll have to replace it when LTE rolls around, but that's a small price to pay.
If you pay an additional monthly fee, you can use 3g. LTE would be faster.

If you want more data, have decent sprint coverage, and are willing to pay for it karma [yourkarma.com] is a great alternative to freedompop's fees and nonsense.

The Photon doesn't have 3G.
Karma is way overpriced. Not sure why anyone would want it. You can get a real phone service with unlimited data for same price.

Karma's strength is that your data doesn't expire / you don't have to add more to keep service active. If you 'share' your karma with others you get rewarded. I don't use it myself as sprint's coverage is too limiting.

Too small for a door stop but if you go fishing you could use it as a sinker to hold your bait down.

It would be cool if someone could develop some custom firmware to allow it to be used as a Wi-Fi extender, but most likely not going to happen. Many are just selling it on eBay or Amazon.
