What is a good download speed from Comcast for streaming??

On speed test.com I'm getting 3.4.
Amazon fire stick with Kodi about 4 feet away from router.
It offers a lot and gets annoying as hell.
So what is the problem? My download speeds? My fire stick with Kodi?

They sent me the new free modem and I installed it but was constantly dropping the signals so I went back to my old Motorola surfboard. Now I'm thinking maybe the Motorola surfboard is the bottleneck? I'm confused! Help!

it's the old Motorola surfboard. I LOVE the firestick with Kodi but it buffers all the time. speed test netted 3.47 download speed. so is my problem the modem or the firestick? Not sure if I should call Comcast or "try" their new modem (arris TG863) again. I had installed it about 3 months ago and the wireless signal kept dropping and was horrible!

What model surfboard? The EXACT model is important.
You dont have to use their modem, you can buy your own. or put the arris in bridge mode and use your own router.

What speed do you get with a PC? If that is also slow, then you may just have poor power levels on the incoming cable. Do you have any cable splitters between the modem and the cable coming in from Comcast?

To check the levels, browse to http://192.168.100.1/ and then click on the "Signal" tab. What are the power levels listed for each channel? Each will read a number such as "1 dBmV". Zero is perfect, but most modems will work OK within a -7 to +7 range. Outside of that and things degrade quickly. If the modem is struggling to get good data, it will show up at the very bottom of that screen, on the Total Correctable Codewords and Total Uncorrectable Codewords rows. Those should be VERY small numbers in relation to the Total Unerrored Codewords row. For example, mine are:

Total Unerrored Codewords 38266402467 38266402785 38266402645 38266403180
Total Correctable Codewords 7668 7390 7528 6964
Total Uncorrectable Codewords 635 597 601 632

Test you speeds when your connected to your modem or router with a wired Ethernet cable!

The model of your modem is very significant. If you're using an old docsis 2.0 modem, I'd buy a new DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola Surfboard, there's no reason to rent a modem.

Checking your signal on the modem status page above is a good idea, but you'll probably have to copy and paste to make the link work.

I don't have the model number because I am at work but I believe it was like 3400? Yeah the modem is ancient and I bought it I'll never rent. The Aris modem I was excited about. I hope that up and couldn't wait to get blazing fast speeds!! Haha!!
But like I said it kept dropping the signal like crazy. I was on the phone with Comcast for about two hours and they never did fix it. So I went back to the old surfboard. The bridge mode sounds like a great idea though!! I have an airport extreme for my router.

Instead of bridging simply buy a new motorola modem..they are fantastic..this way you dont have to pay to rent..and use the apple as your router. Problem solved.

Could you recommend one for me?
I just wanna make sure the "problem" is my current modem before I drop more $$ on a new one.
Thanks for all of your help. I might "try" the Arris again since it is here one day and try the bridge mode and see what I get. Idk.

OK the Motorola 6782 (white one) looks really nice but I also have Comcast phone service! Comcast is charging me $10 for the rental of the one out of my garage that runs our phone service. should I just ditch that one and buy a brand-new one for in the house that runs everything? in that case I might be stuck with the one Comcast sent to me right? I just don't want to pay the extra $10 a month when I don't need it!!

While a modem can be the cause of a slowdown I would not expect to see dramatic results if your not paying for one of the higher priced higher speed packages. As for the combo devices that have both a modem and router it's recommended you buy a modem that is just a modem and then your own wireless router. While the cost is a bit more you end up with a lot better, more stable, better range, wireless access point than the combo devices.

I had 3-5 mbps for years. Played online games and watched Netflix no problem. Only time it was an issue was when I wanted to stream 1080 high Def videos. Anyone who says you need 10 or more is full of junk. There is more to it than just your speed. Distance from router, router quality, how many people are streaming or uploading at the same time, the websites bandwidth, all play a part.

A lot of sites that give free streaming videos lag for me as well. I think they limit their bandwidth because video takes a lot and since you're watching for free and not paying like you do Netflix then there's no reason for them to give you good servers.
