new to apple- how to get into mac computing on the cheap

hi,
i'm new to the apple game, have had a pc for years, android phones etc. Just got an IP6s.

not sure i'm going to fully convert over to apple, so what's the best (i.e. cheapest) way to get a macbook?

i'm just looking for basic computing stuff, music, internet/email, maybe some work using MS office suite. I am looking at used equipment before i invest in new. I am not a power user of any sort.

i've seen some macbooks of different ages on cowboom and craigslist, 2011 seems to be the newest under $500.

my question is for the used macbooks, what can i expect for around $500? just some general basics like: a 2011 macbook, or a 2010 macbook pro/air would be your best bet. also where's some good places to look/buy, those kinds of recommendations.
thanks

Apple and Cheap are mutually exclusive lol. If you really want to convert to a Mac, then you must dispense with all logic, reason and common sense with regards to hardware costs\bang for the buck, desire to have a large software library, ability to repair anything yourself and ability to want to understand anything yourself and take the oath to be a mindless drone follower of the "Geniuses" pledging your wallet unquestioningly to Apple lol..

rep for the laugh. i have not found the IP6S to be earth-shattering. perhaps because of the cost, and my frugality. gonna give this a try.

If your question is what is the cheapest way to get a MacBook I can't say. If you're question however is what is the cheapest way to get a Mac, you can probably find a used Mac Mini in that price range easily (MSRP for the current base model is $499). The 2012 models will perform decently as some featured quad core CPUs. The newer models will be more power efficient.

Wait for the Best Buy discount again and combine that with a student discount (friend, family?) movers coupon and Best Buy card. I ended paying $650 for the base 13 inch Air.

i'm really just looking to get into mac. i would consider a mini, if it were really cheap, but i was hoping for a macbook of some used vintage, something that will run basic stuff, really to give me a sense of the apple OS system.
thanks

You want a sense of the Apple OS???...a burning desire to learn what it is like to be clueless and ignorant on all things computers lol? Seriously, this is just a waste of money. If you have no need for it, then why waste the time, effort and money to buy some Apple computer that serves you no better than an i5 Windows laptop? If Macs were so great, then 90% of the people would not be using Windows based desktops.
