Interested in Switching Cell Carriers, trying to figure out options

small_stuff03 931 404 November 15, 2015 at 09:30 PM
Current Sprint customer of like 15+ years, was looking at my bill and it hit me that it seems like i'm paying a premium for pretty crappy overall cell service, and one contract is over this month so want to evaluate options.... Home service is unusable without wifi calling and/or the AirWave (which has been having problems getting GPS signal lately).. The principle of paying sprint for service but then having my cell service dependent on my cable internet connection just doesn't seem like the best way to operate. Just want to figure out what's out there, and to figure out if i can save $$ and/or perhaps get better service.

My Current Sprint Bill:
1500 Anytime minutes, Unlimited data, text

Primary Line:
110- (22%)24.20 Employer discount = 85.80
+ 10 Premium Data for Line 1
+ 30 for Line 2
+ 30 for Line 3
+ 30 for Line 4
+ 16.14 Sprint Surcharges
+ 9.64 Taxes and fees
= Total = $211.58

Line 1 = Samsung Galaxy S4, contract just ended, need to decide to upgrade if keeping sprint, or....
Line 2, 3, 4 = Galaxy S5, 11 Months left in contract.

Pooled Data Usage the last 6 months:
Average = a little under 5GB
Highest Months over the past year = 7.5GB
(two of the lines account for 90% of the data usage). I think if I actually got reliable data in more spots more would get used, so I think 9-10GB pooled should be a decent guess (BUT since a chunk of that is pandora/spotify/tunein type stuff, for t-Mobile as I understand, that is included unlimited, so I might require less data.)

Average number of minutes = 1200, have gone over 2000 minutes but no overages thanks to wi-fi calling)

__

Other info:
Switched jobs lately, discount information through this employer:

ATT = 17%, details:
"Discount may vary monthly and applies only to the recurring monthly service charge of qualified voice and data plans (unless otherwise provided in Business Agreement), not overages. Minimum monthly service charge, additional AT&T services, or other eligibility requirements may apply. "
"Service discounts are not available with unlimited voice plans. For Family Talk, discount applies only to primary line. For all Mobile Share plans, discount applies only to the recurring monthly plan charge of plans with 1GB or more, not to additional monthly device access charges. Discount may take up to two bill cycles after eligible confirmed and will not apply to prior charges. Discount is applied after application of any available credit and may not be combined with other service discounts. "

Verizon = 19%. Couldn't find the exact terms + details, only "19% off eligible plans"

T-Mobile = 15% Advantage discount, but only on individual plan, not family one.

Sprint = 23%, details: Discount only applies to the data service charge for Sprint Family Share Pack and Unlimited, My Way. Discount is not available with no credit check or Cut Your Bill in Half offers or Mobile Hotspot add-on. Discount may also apply to select previously available services where specified.

Here are what I believe my options are.

ATT = 15GB Mobile Share Value plan = 100, -17emp. disc, +60 for 4 lines = 143 + taxes/fees

Verizon = 12GB = 80, -19% emp disc, + 80 for 4 lines = 144.80 + taxes/fees

Tmobile = $120 for 6GB per line (is the data pooled between all or is it individual?) + taxes/fees

Do my estimations look ok? Also I know I didn't take into account the device fees (I don't plan on leasing, would prefer to buy the device outright, probably not iphones), have reasonable flexibility on the phones, will probably look at the slickest deals and decide based on that..

Comments/Tips/Advice?

Thanks in advance.

what state do you live in? any promotions in that state? Verizon has an awesome promotion in Tx and possibly LA. 16GB data plan for $100 a month and NO line charges for the first year and up to 10 lines on one account.

Michigan (and 1 line is in Pennsylvania)- primary line could be in either state.

darn so its not like we can share the 24gb any way we want it. oh well. I like that tmo has so many music and video streaming sites that don't count against the data cap.

does anyone know of a way to track how much data a specific app uses?
