Need cheap service options for T Mobile Iphone 5s ...broke college student

bceltic 379 207 November 16, 2015 at 04:00 AM
Hello, my daughter is away at college and a promised job fell through.
She is in a $100+ option with T Mobile currently, and needs to find a MUCH cheaper service! I was hoping for Ring plus or freedom pop, ( thinking her phone was a sprint) but that wont work with her phone. I was checking out straight talk, but have no idea how the service is?
She has no contract, but will have to pay off the remaining cost of the actual phone if she cancels.
I've never had my own cell, so I'm really out of the loop when it comes to all this!
I recently grabbed a sprint phone from Best Buy for either Ring plus or freedom pop for my son, maybe that might be the best option for her also??? HELP Thanks!!

Let me add that she is 19 and LIVES for her phone!! lol

T-Mobile has much cheaper plans than $100/month! Firstly she should talk to T-Mobile! I can't imagine what she'd be paying $100 for on a single line.

She did call, the best she was able to get was 20.00 off? Confused

Something is missing from this story. T-Mobile has a $50 plan with unlimited data/talk/text (2GB of LTE data) that would work just fine. I assume she is also making payments on that iPhone 5S. Since it's a 2 year old phone there shouldn't be much balance left at this point. Even so, right now you could get a brand new iPhone 6S for $27/mo, which adds up to just $77/mo.

Is she on a plan with a lot of LTE data? I'm sure that could be downgraded. She might not WANT to, but something has to give. Once that phone is paid off, which should be very soon for a 5S, she has a lot of cheap options available.

First things first, determine contract end date or balance left on the phone!

Evaluate if you meet the requirements to unlock the phone: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1588
If possible, get the phone unlocked.

Service options once contracts/outstanding balance are paid and device is unlocked**:
-TracFone (att/tmobile) BYOP 1 min = 1 min talk, 1 sms & 1 mb data. As low as $6.75/mo depending on usage. $200/yr gets you 4500min/4500sms/4.5gb data & a year of service. Smart phones get triple minutes
-T-Mobile pre-paid:
---$30/mo 100min, unlimited sms, 5gb high speed data then throttled
---$35/mo ulim sms/talk no data
---$40/mo ulim talk, text, 1 gb high speed data
-AT&T prepaid (go phone) $45/mo ulilm talk, text, 1.5gb data
-h2o wireless [h2owirelessnow.com] (AT&T): $30 ulim talk txt, 500mb, $40 unlim talk txt 1gb high speed ***data roll over
-PureTalk (AT&T) [puretalkusa.com]: ulim talk/sms + 100mms & 100mb data $24; 500mb/400mms $29, 1gb/ulim mms $35
-Red pocket [goredpocket.com] (AT&T): ulim talk & txt + 500mb $30, ulim data 500mb high speed $40
-AirVoice [airvoicewireless.com] (AT&T) $20-50/mo for 100mb-5gb of data
-Simple mobile [simplemobile.com](T-mobile, owned by tracfone/american movil): unlimited talk text 4gb of data $40/month
*many of the carriers listed above are mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), they use att/tmobile/vzw/sprints networks and basically resell service they buy in bulk. Prepaid plans often won't roam the same as post paid, meaning if you're on t-mobile but roam to at&t a lot, you service will be much worse on prepaid.
**some of these mvnos will work on locked att/tmo phones
Customer service for tracfone brands can be pretty awful, there's a reason they're the cheapest.

Porting her number to http://ring.to or google voice could be something to consider.

Since it sounds like you're the one paying, have you considered bringing everyone into a family plan? Those usually start to pay off at three people. You can get 6gb data and unlimited talk for $120/4 people or $100/3 people from T-Mobile, and many other options I don't recall of the top of my head.

As far as service, not sure what area your in but make sure these networks have service in her area. I know in my midewest capitol city on Tmobile you would be lucky to make a 2g call. Not sure if she will be relocating for employment or not but it might be best to remain flexible until she knows her location.

Just to give you something to compare...

I currently have a T-Mobile Family plan with 4 -lines (unlimited Talk/Text and 2.5GB Data per line) and paying $100 (+tax) / month (includes all 4-lines).

T-mobile has a Family plan where you can get 4-lines (unlimited talk/text and 10GB Data per line) for $120 (+tax) /month

Cricket has a family plan that includes 5-lines (unlimited talk/text and 2.5GB Data per line) for $100/month (including tax)

She is over paying for her service and phone. Best to buy Android phone outright (e.g. Nexus 6 for $350) and add it to the service.
