Marriott is buying Starwoods for $12.2B:

http://www.cnbc.com/2015/11/16/ma...stock.html

Way too early to know exact impact on Starpoints, but given out lucrative they have been, this does not bode well:

- Great hotel point values, even with continuous devaluation (Ex: Four properties in NYC to book for 12,000 pts/night. With crazy NYC tax. that's easily a $250-$300 room, or a $0.02-$0.025 per point redemption value)
- 5th night free with 4 night award stay
- Amazing airline frequent flier mile transfers with 20% bonus

- Great Plat benefits (what happens to lifetime Plats?)

I have benefited so much from SPG between work and personal travel, this is terrible. No need to panic yet, but will keep close eye on what Marriott group announces with Starpoints program and Elite status to decide how to proceed with the 250,000+ points in account right now...

Ya, keeping fingers crossed they don't mix the awards programs! If they do it'll be a quick 20% transfer to AA!

BTW - lifetime these days doesn't usually mean your life time. It means as long as they feel like honoring it.

Best SPG promo I got was 7 free nights at the St Regis on Kauai for doing some hotel hopping. Was a great time to go on a business trip for a few weeks!

Best Marriott promo I got - crickets chirping

Exactly. Of course with our luck, on the same day they announce the changes, they will simultaneously take away the 20% transfer bonus. Grrr....

We have gotten so many amazing deals including free 5 nights upgraded suites at the Excelsior Firenze and Prince de Galle Paris for 48,000 points each. Simply can't be beat.

Let's be fair to Marriott. Crickets chirping... with free breakfast!LMAO

We will have to see how this all shakes out - we have a friend who works for SPG on phone customer service, so will see if we can get any early dirt...

I've been platinum in Starwood, and platinum in Marriott in the same year, but only a lifetime gold in Marriott now and curious as to if Starwood is actually the better program. I did see much better upgrades when I was a platinum Starwood member, but at that point, the Aladdin was just bought out by them, and had a nice upgrade there and some in NYC W hotels. That said, I've appreciated the Marriott program better personally and was happy to hear that I'll have status in both again. Hopefully people can get beyond the pissing contest of whose program is better, as I'm just relaying my personal experience and understand opinions differ.

Hilton and Hyatt both have status matching offers until early-mid January if anyone is interested in sampling state in other programs.
