What do you think about the i5-6500 for gaming?

Hey guys I regularly build machines for friends and family but they are usually pretty basic. I haven't built a gaming rig in a while and am trying to build a system with a fair balance of budget and performance.

I have the Zotac 970 coming from jet and was wondering how you guys feel about the 6500 for gaming. Tigerdirect has it for $190 plus imin Cali and have 10% cashback from BofA plus possibly a $10 coupon for a total of $162 delivered. Would you jump on that or keep shopping for something a bit stronger.

BTW I am about to start playing FO4 and I heard its pretty dependant on cpus more than most games.

Thanks for your help and advice

Any quad core i5 or i7 released in the last 5 years will give satisfactory performance. (starting with Sandy Bridge) A Skylake processor is really about future proofing your motherboard features at this point.

If you are looking at non-cpu specific discounts, maybe get the 6600K. It might buy you a little more use down the road.

If you get a non-K chip, I say go ahead and cheap out on the board and one with DDR3 if you have RAM laying around. I'm very unimpressed with DDR4 latency at this point.

He is on the right track for sure. However from my standpoint even if money is tight I would save a few more bucks [or have breakfast cereal for lunch instead of whatever] to get the i7 INTEL CPU. In the long run you will be happier with your decision.

Don't ask me about my opinion of an AMD CPU. It isn't pretty.
