Blades are not protected by any guards, looks like they'd get destroyed any time they bang into anything. Most of the ones I've seen have the blades enclosed within a protective guard. I'll pas on this one, it looks like a cheaply made pos that will break on day one.

$59.99 is for just the drone without camera. The one with the camera is 119.99.

With the FPV version, is there noticeable video lag?

Anyone have actual experience using one of these and ended up needing replacement blades due to a crash? I want to know how hard or easy is it to get replacement blades and how expensive. Depending on cost of parts this could be a decent drone to practice with before upgrading to a real drone like a Phantom. I'd like to have a Phantom 3 to capture vacation footage, but concerned about a noob like me buying an expensive machine and breaking it. Thinking it might be better to get used to drone flying using a cheap model, but maybe that's the wrong plan. Maybe the ease of use of the Phantom outweighs the need to practice on a cheaper model in which I could live with a less costly crash. Thoughts?

You should read some reviews. The Ominus series is a very well received quad. Extremely durable (as far as toy quads go). Distributed by Great Plains so you can get parts at pretty much any hobby shop or directly through Towerhobbies. Parts are cheap. As far as the blades they are very durable. Your more likely to bend a shaft or strip a few teeth off the spur than destroy a blade.

Also, excellent range on the Ominus. Blows crap like the Syma X5C-1 out of the water. Also has a true acro mode which is almost impossible to find on most toy quads.

One downside is the model without the camera is a bit under powered. No clue on the camera model as I don't have the one with the camera.

As for general advice, all people new to flying should practice on a toy quad before flying anything expensive. Get flying down in a circle, figure eights and nose pointed towards you hover. Then step up to bigger quads.

I know nothing about drones but my 8 year old has one on his christmas list. Is this something suitable for novice? If not, can someone recommend a starting point? Thank you!

I did - a few said that without the blade covers, it's not suited for flying indoors because there's the potential for damage, and it's underpowered for outdoor flight, so that soured me on this one. Also, to me, anything that comes in 46 colors seems like it's made with a focus on selling lots of them not making good ones. Whatever, this one is not for me.

This would be fine for your 8 year old. Outdoor flying though. It's to big for realistic indoor flying. If your looking for indoor flying get something like a Hubsan micro.
