I've not looked at this stuff in at least a couple years now.. Are the 1 & 2 TB drives particularly good deals? I could use another HD, but I'm in no rush. TIA!

Mechanic drives last longer if there 2.5". I learned my lessons with years of 3.5" due to there parts failing. As in the bigger they are the harder they fall. These are decent deals.

My personal feeling is to use Hitachi when a good sale happens because they seem to have the least failure rate according to one study ( a datacenter):
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/ha...r-q2-2015/
However, I have a 2 year-old toshiba 1t 2.5 drive in my laptop that is used every day. I wouldn;t hesitate to buy a toshiba or western digital. Toshiba has a 3 year warranty and western digital blue has a 2 year. I haven't installed my WD 2t black ( 5 year warranty). As cheap as they are replacing them every 2 to 3 years is so less stressful than losing that unbacked up valuable item (or back them up with a newer model). My $.02. I have a samsung .25t that is 10 years old and still going fine. One of my WD's is 4 years old. They are backed up by my six month old 3t WD green.

Almost posted this just now since it didn't show up in my search originally (due to the space in "2 TB" -- is there a standard for how to write this?).

Anyway, seems like a good price. Don't forget there is a $15 Visa Checkout promo for using Chase Freedom if you haven't done that yet.

I'm in need of an HDD, but I don't know if this is a good deal. I've never purchased one before. I doubt I'll make up my mind before the sale ends.

Oh well.

Reviews are horrible for these; gotta pass, myself, but I hope the rest of you have good luck with yours if you get one.

Umm.. I think quite the opposite is true. Laptop hdds can take less damage.

My favorite 1TB-2TB drive ST2000DM001. To me, the best hdd over 3TB is Toshiba 5TB.

Toshiba Drives 4TB and less use designs originally made by Hitachi (pre-WD acquisition)...
Hard drive failures on newegg always seem to be grossly exaggerated in the reviews. I have four 2TB and two 3TB Toshibas running right now. no issues with any of them.

Not really sure what reasoning there is to back up this claim. Typically you can fit more hardware into a 3.5 drive that helps extend the MTBF... Anecdotal evidence not included, where do you get this information?

Buy the Toshiba. I haven't seen any legit reports stating anything about reliability issues with them. They use Hitachi designs. And they run fairly quiet for their speed.

There is a 2-3% early failure rate across all big HDD manufacturers, not including some specific models that have issues. You always run the risk of getting a dud, so holding out for one brand over another is silly considering the most-likely <1% difference in failure rate. Hit the best price point, and keep everything backed-up regardless of the HDD's manufacturer.
