Best Buy has the WD - My Book 5TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive - Black for $120 with free shipping or in-store pickup. If you still have the $20 off $20 visa checkout coupon that would make this deal even better.

If you check what drive model is actually in the enclosure using CrystalDiskInfo [portableapps.com]

WD50EZRX: Green [wdc.com]
WD50EZRZ: Blue [wdc.com]
WD50EFRX: Red [wdc.com]

has anyone reported getting red drives out of these from Bestbuy? Or have they pretty much all been shifted over to the green drives now?

Per one Amazon review for what appears to be an older model:

Quote :
Note: the hard drive is not the typical Green Desktop Hard Drive we usually find in these enclosure, but Red NAS (Network Attached Storage) Drive. Not sure if WD generally use the Red Drive for this model or they are just using it for this batch to meet demands.

For those that would like to see what color drive is inside please refer to DCM: the Green will have DCADBAD on the box bottom label, while all of the Red drives are DCADBAC

On another note, it is odd that from what I can tell Best Buy is the only one selling the 5TB model. Even WD's website does not seem to list it.

Noticed that earlier today. Picked one up from Fry's about a month ago for $109. Now, no where to be found.

Be aware that these things die from heat death in two years or less, as they lack a cooling fan. You be better off building your own external drive with a quality enclosure that included a fan.

Or you can take off the HD and use it as a internal HD

Oh, I hope that does not happen. But I've bought over a dozen WD for the last 6 years or so and I've never had a failure on these drives, knock on wood. They compare much favorably to Seagate. I used to buy Seagate exclusively but more than half of the dozen or so I've bought have failed. Hence my switch to WD.

Well I typically unplug mine when not in use. I plan to just use this as a backup once a month and keep everything I need on my current SSD/internal HDD.
