The anova is an awesome product, however if you are one of those who want to diy yourself a sous vide setup.

Get a thermocontroller: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...ge_o09_s00 highly rated thermocoupler (4.5/5 stars with 49 reviews), program this guy to stop power when a temperature is reached. $27

Get an aquarium circulator: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...ge_o09_s00 I've used this guy up to temp 170 with no problems $8

Get an electric heating element, you can use a hotplate, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...ge_o08_s00 or a drop in heating element if you want to use a cooler (use a ceramic cup to hold the heating coil): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...4Q6Q96491P $17 and $8 respectively

and whatever pot you got, or cooler would be your sous vide setup, put your food in a ziplock, use the water in the pot to get out the air and seal it, and let it cook. Use an egg timer for time control.

It's really cheap and hacky, but you can get see you can have a sous vide setup for under 50 dollars assuming you already have a pot and ziplock. You won't have timing control, but you shouldn't let food hang out in the sous vide setup long after it cooks due to changes in texture.

If you've already decided that you need sous vide in your life, then the Anova makes sense, like if you cook for large parties regularly. If you're a single guy, like me, and cook at most 2 portions, the diy setup has served me well. If I ever start doing large parties regularly then I'll be able to justify the Anova personally imo.
I've had my Precision cooker for about 6 months. I will never cook steak any other way. Absolute god-send for BBQ challenged people like me.

One thing to consider: Get a small 12qt cooler from Walmart ($15). Cut out one of the cup holder indentations in the lid - it'll be the perfect size for the Precision cooker to drop in. Using a cooler instead of a pot makes a huge difference in power consumption and water evporation.

For example, to cook a couple filet mignon steaks in an open pot of water for 1 hour consumed about 400Whrs. Cooking short ribs for 24 hours in the cooler took just over 500Whrs. If you plan on doing any longer-term sous vide'ing, get the cooler.

I bought one of these, not too impressed with it... would rather grill my steak and not boil it in a plastic bag. Gonna try halibut before I get rid of it.

try searing the steak afterwards to brown it.

This is a good deal for an entry level sous vide machine. Will do pretty much all home-cooking sous vide project.

Yes, either seared with a hot pan (eg. cast iron). Or use a torch. Look into using a torch with the SearzAll attachment.

It has absolutely nothing to do with "boiling". There are plenty of advantages to sous vide cooking, but if you prefer other methods by all means use them. Personally I'd never be able to consistently replicate what I can do with sous vide using other methods. Best kitchen "gadget" I've ever bought. Or rather my girlfriend bought for me. I'm pretty sure she's more than gotten her money's worth out of it for all the cooking I've done for her though.

Besides using the app which i think is really cool (but admittedly never use anymore), i believe just aesthetics and mainly the clip on the Precision is better and able to be used on more containers.

btw i love my anova. definitely my best purchase of 2015. i bought one for my dad on father's day (i believe $99) and he rarely uses it. I kind of want to take his so i can have 2.

Yeah WTF is up with that? I'd pull the trigger on the wifi version. Bluetooth is pointless.
