I think my wife will kill me if I got these to go along with the black ones I just got.
People usually want active noise cancellation for what you're describing.

There's a lot to know about headphones. Some headphones have big cups and set around your ear while some press directly against your ear. The latter get very uncomfortable after a few hours of usage. Also some headphones are 'open' which means the sound leaks out and the people around you can hear everything you're listening to.

Most people will want big cups that set around the ear and will want closed headphones.

You also want headphones with detachable cables. Headphones that have wires soldered will wear and tear over time and then one of your cups won't play any sound. If you get detachable cables you can just replace the cable when this happens.

I handled these white ones, they are actually pretty nice. not like white white, but nice white if that makes sense, heh

Good to know, I was wondering if the color is too bright.

for anyone on the fence about these, I have the black M50s. absolutely some of the highest quality headphones for the money. There is a reason that these have been used in pro recording studios for years

Yeah, but they don't have the Beats logo. Lol. I have the regular M50 so debating whether to get the M50x. Is the detachable cable worth it?

Just bought the m40x yesterday for $67...main use will be used plugged into my amp when teaching myself to play the guitar as to not disturb my wife. I know the m50x is very well regarded, but are they worth the extra ~$30 over the m40x for my application? Neither set will ever leave the house as I have a set of noise cancelling Sennheisers for travel.

m40 is neutral and would be better for guitar.

after buying these recently due to all the "good" reviews, I feel they are avg at best. buy if you're geared toward rap, edm or rock. otherwise, look elsewhere (like the HD 598's.
