Anyone interested, you can't find a better desk speakers than these at 300-$400 price range. So at $200 that is a devastatingly good deal.

agreed. great near field speakers. Use them as my pc speakers connected to a focusrite scarlett 2i4 and it sounds amazing. Got a deal on them over a year ago for $225 for the set and got the 2i4 on clearance at best buy for like $65. It is a pretty sweet setup. Love the sound, I would love to get the subwoofer made for these but it is always so expensive that I have never taken the plunge. Haven't really felt the need for much extra bass with these anyways. These are pretty flat in response so give a really accurate sound.I am a huge fan of these and would buy them again for sure.

Just make sure you have correct cables if you buy these as they don't come with any and don't hook up like a standard pc speaker, so you will need to get cables for a balanced connection on the speakers. cables should only cost you like $20 at guitar center, cheaper if you get them online. Cable needed will vary based on your needs and what connection you are using on your pc or whatever device you are connected them to.

I currently have the av40's and won't be replacing them, as I don't do a ton of listening at my pc, however, if you are going to be spending a good amount of time there, I'd recommend you step up to these as I've heard nothing but good things

how are these for volume, as opposed the just being accurate. would like to get portable BBQ / cocktail party speakers, perhaps eventually with a sub. I had a pair of similar JBL monitors back in the day but one is now fried / dead.

Thoughts? anyone?

they get pretty loud but they are monitors, in others words they are made for mixing and near field listening. so they sound great when you are close to them. they aren't really made for that sort of thing. i guess they would be alright, but not really the point of these.

They also are not very portable simply because you need so many cables to connect all the things together.

If you want just volume, get a PA.

Define "close" - would they work for a 12x12 room for example?

near field monitors are made to be setup equally apart. same distance on each side and aimed directly at your face. this is the optimal setup for monitors like this. they can sound fine to listen in a room but they are designed in this manner. if you need to further understand how mixing monitors work or what near field listening is you should do a google search.
