"TRENDING DEALS" changed to "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU" when logged on

Silver_Fox 1,037 872 December 9, 2015 at 03:36 PM
I noticed a change in the Frontpage when logged in.

On the right hand side, there used to be "POPULAR DEALS" and "TRENDING DEALS". It still says this if you are NOT logged in.

When you are logged in, "TRENDING DEALS" is changed to "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU". I personally find this less useful. The first few hours I saw it, the "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU" deals were exactly the same as the "POPULAR DEALS". Recently, there is less overlap.

I prefer to see what the "TRENDING DEALS" are globally that other SDers are jumping onto, so I can join in before it's too late. Not more of the same deals that I have been shopping/paying attention to anyway and probably don't need more of.

What do you think?

Now, I have to open up SlickDeals on another browser, as a guest user (not logged in), to see "TRENDING DEALS".

Sorry, not familiar with how to do attachments yet.

Yes, where your screenshots show "TRENDING DEALS", I now see, in the redesign view, "POPULAR DEALS", in the Frontpage.

I think this is a new feature. Try logging out and logging back in to see if the latter shows up for you.

I just logged out, the Frontpage changed to "TRENDING DEALS". When I logged back in, THAT got replaced with "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU".

EDIT: I just tried attaching two screenshots (note the difference in login at the top right). Also, I did a hover over the "i" [information] icon after "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU" that explains, to pop up that window. Regardless, my words above should be enough.

My suggestion: it does not have to be either / or.

Why not just keep "TRENDING DEALS" along with the new "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU"?

EDIT: It only shows "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU" on my (logged on) Frontpage. "TRENDING DEALS" appears in the usual place on other pages.

EDIT 2: Looks like it's back to "normal". The "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU" is gone and the "TRENDING DEALS" is back on my Frontpage.

I would welcome back "RECOMMENDED FOR YOU" - if they fine-tune the algorithm on the suggestions - and have it in addition to "TRENDING DEALS" versus replacing the latter.

Hi Silver_Fox, this was part of a test that went out prematurely. It should be gone now, but we are working on something like this. It'll probably be a short-term test, and our goal isn't to replace Trending Deals with this new module forever, but running a test against the Trending module was the simplest way for us to find out if it was something people were interested in.

It will be better (and more similar to trending deals) when it goes live for real.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad that the recommended module is something you're interested in, and your suggestions about making it additive instead of a replacement are duly noted. Smilie

I see that "recommended deals" is back, but called "RECOMMENDED TRENDING DEALS" on my Frontpage (i.e. when logged in).

But...it replaced "TRENDING DEALS" instead of being in addition to "TRENDING DEALS".

I can still see "TRENDING DEALS" on other deal pages or on the Frontpage if I'm logged out.

Please make it additional instead of replacement! I'm making a strong suggestion that you do this, if you don't want to get howls of protest on a more wide rollout of this test.

Do you know how SDers angrily thumb down a deal if the OP even dares to use the words "price mistake", however innocently? They feel so ENTITLED that they DESERVE to benefit from a retailer's price mistake that they lash out when their deal alert doesn't pan out. Or when they react angrily, instead of sadly, when they miss out on a flash deal?

This will happen, to a lesser degree, when some SDers find out that they aren't really getting "hot tip" trending deals early, which others are getting, because of the personalization. They will be annoyed - or worst- when they miss out on deals.

Again, why not have both?

On the positive side: it seems like SD fine-tuned their algorithm somewhat - I no longer see an overlap with/parrotting of the Popular Deals.

On the negative side: the "RECOMMENDED TRENDING DEALS" don't interest or intrigue me.

There are me-too items like TV and memory cards. I would search for me-too items by myself or set deal alerts for them.

There are things that I never searched for nor am interested in: Sani Seal Toilet Gasket at Lowes $2 YMMV (I admit I have looked at Lowes, YMMV, and Lowes YMMV deals in the past), but I'm not interested in "APEC - Top Tier - Built in USA - Ultra Safe, Premium 5-Stage Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filter System (ROES-50) $85 Amazon warehouse".

I want back real global Trending Deals, so I can see what is trending for the whole SD population. Lots might not interest me, but lots will intrigue me because I never thought to shop for those items.

=========================

That's why companies spend millions on advertising, especially during the Super Bowl, to expose their products to many people to get new customers.

I find it really creepy that AdChoices display items from retailers that I have been browsing. Useless to show me back the exact same items that I am shopping for anyway. And even worse, showing me outdated pricing information (when price has gone up, or even worse, when prices have gone DOWN) for said items. Show me something new!

As Marmotto said, this is a temporary test to get data about the modules (which includes your feedback). Smilie

Silver_Fox, thanks so much for the feedback. Well articulated and useful. We will definitely take all you mention into consideration as we start getting test results back.

I second Silver Fox and thank them for creating this post and bringing this to light!
I have a routine: I have SD set as my home page, so I can see the latest/greatest whenever I open my browser. I will first check the front page to see if anything is of interest. I'll then check the right side margins, to see Popular Deals and Trending Deals. As mentioned, Trending Deals has changed to something I cannot/do not use. To see the Trending Deals, as it use to be, I will either open any front page deal in a new tab, which shows up in Classic view, which will then correctly display Trending Deals, or I will simply change the overall view back to Classic.
BTW, for this being a premature and temporary test, Recommended Trending Deals is still showing up, a good two weeks after Silver Fox's original post.

Silver Fox, my suggestion would be to just open SD in Classic View.

So, SD, are the changes of recent permanent or just a dupe?
From what I can tell, all you did is remove "Recommended" from the title of the "Trending Deals" that appears on the logged in front page, so it looks the same as the normal "Trending Deals" you would see anywhere else. Evidence:
1. Front page "Trending Deals" is not hyperlinked; normal one is.
2. Front page "Trending Deals" shows an information icon in place of the RSS feed icon. Cursoring over the information icon shows that these deals were selected for "you" (i.e. Recommended).
Thanks for the dupe and the inaccurate trending deals!
