request: deal alert setting for minimum 0 rating

rl1024 372 96 December 9, 2015 at 07:53 PM
Deal alerts currently has a setting for Minimum Thread Rating.

The options are: Any, 1+, 2+, 3+, 4+, 5+, FP.

I would like to only get alerts for 0+, meaning new threads or 0 rated threads, but never negatively rated threads.

Using Any rating, I get alerts for negative rated threads. If I use 1+, I assume I will miss out on newly created threads that are not yet rated.

Thanks.

Hi, rl1024,
I hope you are doing well.

I think the Any option would cover you, even though you stated that using Any as the Minimum Thread Rating means that you would "get alerts for negative rated threads."

First, in terms of order, this is my understanding of the Minimum Thread Rating option in Deal Alerts (DA):
  1. A user creates a thread that has your DA term (e.g., router).
  2. As soon as the thread is created, it is neutral, as in users have not yet voted on the thread.
  3. At this point, you receive a DA through Email, PM, Notification, and/or Mobile.
If that order is correct, you should be receiving every single DA with the example term router, regardless of votes because the system detects the DA before any user is able to vote on it. In order words, you should be receiving every single DA with your alert term with a minimum of 0 rating. Of course, the thread may be a negative rating by the time you get there, but when the DA was sent to you, the thread had no votes whatsoever.

Please let me know if I am incorrect or unclear. Someone else, perhaps a staff member, can let me know if I have made a poor assumption.

I hope this helps,
Tofu Vic

I see. I thought there was some delay for new threads, so people would thumb down it and after the delay the alert would fire. That's why I thought I was seeing negative rated threads.

I think there are now 2 different behaviors for:
1. instant email notifications
2. forum notifications

For email notifications, I definitely see negatively rated threads. For example, the email body of one alert is:
Quote :
Heads UP: ATT AT&T / Tmobile discounts on your monthly wireless service, devices for college students and corporate accounts

-4 09/16/2015 12:05AM
This alert was sent when the rating was already -4, which leads me to believe there is some delay. The thread is created with 0 rating, alert matched, then a delay, then someone thumbs down, then email is sent with the current negative rating.
With 0+ setting, I would expect not to see this email alert.

For forum notifications, the way you describe it makes sense. When I see negative rating deal alerts, it's the current rating and not the rating at the time of the alert.
I would like to at least hide the negative rated threads when I get the notification, since there are sometimes multiple negative notification popups that push out the postive rated notifications.

I can live with the way it is now, though. I just go to the Notifications & Activity screen to see all notifications and look past the alerts with lots of red thumbs down

You do bring up a good point, and I know for a fact that there is a delay of some sort. I have also received email notifications of threads where the email message mention a negative or positive rating.

My assumption is that despite the delay, notifications are sent out based on the thread creation, not based on the thread's rating X minutes after it has been created. Of course, this is just a guess, so it would be nice if a staff member can let us know how the system is set up.
