Is it a good set? Say, compared to the Lionel trains?

It is not high quality stuff. Parts are made of plastic. It does serve the purpose and come with lights, sound, and smoke (although the smoke is bad).

I bought it last year for $20 on Homedepot for my son. The quality is no way compareing to the Lionel trains. This is much bigger in size, all plastic and very easy to break. The wheels are not straight and get off the track easily. The smoke is really bad, smell like burning plastic.
I'd not recommend it at all.

It is if you turn off the annoying sounds and toxic smoke. I bought it last year from Staples for $20. It is around the tree this year.

In for one. I was just about to purchase for $55 on Amazon so glad I searched here first. I'm not expecting pro quality just something big a bright that I can set up for my 2 year old Train Fanatic to watch. For hands on play he prefers Brio and Thomas the Tank.
