The short answer is, it depends. Your car adapter is probably USB A. If you have a USB A to USB C cable, it will work (at somewhere in the 0.5 to 2A range). If you have a USB C to USB C cable, you'll need an adapter. What device did you get?

Apparently many of these A to C cables / adapters are terrible and out of spec. Some guy from Google has been leaving reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/prof...cr_rdp_pdp

According to https://support.google.com/nexus/...2320?hl=en it comes with 1 USB C to USB A cable. You can use that with your existing chargers. It won't fast charge, but it should charge at the same speed those adapters charged at before.

If it physically fits both receptacles, it should charge. That said the opposite isn't necessarily true. Many of the rechargeable battery packs (meant to charge phones) come with a cable that ONLY has the power wiring and NOT the data wires.

A compliant A to C cable can be used with any of your chargers, just be aware you may only get 1A/1.5A or 2.1A max charging rate vs the 3A from the C-C chargers.

Check the amazon reviews link posted above or this spreadsheet has been created by someone on Reddit tracking approved cables: https://docs.google.com/spreadshe...VNzbA/edit

This is only going to confuse the heck out of consumers as USB-C starts replacing everything.

Thankfully most cable manufacturers seem very responsive and are fixing their mistakes. I even contacted a seller on aliexpress I purchased cables from and they are aware and fixing their cables too. So hopefully these bad cables will go away soon enough..
