Thread Details

It's that time of year again when Garage sales are popular. I have seen some discussion of Garage Sales in regular discussion threads, and perhaps there is talk of it in the BS thread, but I think it would be good to have it's own thread and people can add in the WIKI what sold for them and at what price - or what they will sell it for.

This way people having a garage sale can have a nice reference sheet and can learn from the mistakes of others. I will post in the WIKI info I have read.

Yes, I am having a garage sale this weekend at a friends work. I have read some info on another site and it is nice that they have their own thread for this.

Garage sales are not for everyone, please no bashing on those who wish to do it. It's a way to make money to buy more coupons and fuel your 'addiction'. LOL!

Mods, if you think this would be better suited in a different forum, please advise or move. I just thought it would be good to have a garage sale discussion and a WIKI to boot to help others.

Thanks!

Vicki

had the fiirst day of my garage sale today, did ok, i really didn't have much stockpile and still made over $300, i would of waited a while before having a sale, my one of my sil is moving the end of this month, and the other one just got layed off and wanted to do one, overall with 4 families we made almost $600 the first day, so we are happy!

I finally got my camera unloaded. I took some pictures of my garage sale in October (2011).
Just thought I would share. I have a single-car size garage at an apartment, so also setup in the driveway outside.

i own that same exact canopy. laugh out loud
I'm just reading up on these garage sale discussions right now. I was wondering how easy is it to set up your canopy? Does it take just a few minutes or an hour or two? Also, the driveway is slightly slanted, will that be a problem for a canopy?

I'm thinking about buying one on sale for $30 this week and I only have 1 more day to buy it. I don't know how easy it would be to set up and if it's too complicated, I don't want to waste money on it (or in this case, ECB's at CVS). I also won't have that much time to set one up. TIA!

Got one last year at Rite-Aid. It takes a bit of practice to set it up. Put it together in your living room first, put numbered stickers on the poles for easy recognition!
Second time around only took about 10 minutes to set up. (Trial run in the living room a lot longer!!!)

I have an EZ-UP canopy. Nothing to put together, just take it out of the bag, stretch out the frame and push the top up. Takes about 5 minutes. woot Mine was about $70 new a few years ago.

We have one of those RA ones. Picked it up for weekend outings. One and only time we used it, setting it up took FOREVER. First slight breeze and it was all over the place!!!!!

Moved our shade needs up to a EZ Up (Sears $60 +/-). Easy to put up, easy to take down and holds up better inthe wind. We found a QuikShade at Walmart for $120. True 10 x 10 shade and better for the wind we get. Works great for our BBQ's!!!!!!

I would definately say to get a easy up, first up or similiar folding frame canopy and don't waste your money on the ones that require putting numbered poles together, The pole frame canpoies are time consuming for setup and are very flimsy. You should be able to pick up a folding frame one starting fairly priced and well worth the money to save your sanity. We had picked up one on sale from Home Depot a few years ago for $39.

depends on what you get. mine is ez. just have to pull the adjacent corners out 'til the lock in place. after that, you just raise the legs at each corner. probably takes me a couple minutes to get it up and it's an one-man job. Big Grin i, unfortunately, have to replace it since i loaned it out to my ski school and it broke. Frown

Your prices are right in line with mine... hope to have another sale the first weekend in May.

What's everyone going to price all the Nasal Ease and Similasan from Wags this weekend? I have 12 of each sitting on my pricing table at the moment. Thinking $3 each? It's always hard to price the free after RR stuff, since most people haven't heard of it.

After having garage sales (twice a year) for years, I was shut down this week. I am stunned! A code compliance city employee showed up at my sale on the 3rd day. She was very polite and professional and said that one person called in to the city code compliance area and complained that I was purchasing things for very cheap with coupons and reselling for a profit. The code compliance officer informed me that it is not allowed in my community. I was shocked as I have had multiple police officers shop at my sale over the years. No one ever mentioned that I could be at risk for a problem. The code compliance employee (not a police officer) admitted that a police officer would probably not even be aware of such an obscure ordinance. She also admitted that MANY garage sales have resale items. The only reason that they came to mine is that someone complained and so they had to follow up on it. She also said that in the 3 years that she had been doing code compliance, she had never had to shut down a garage sale for a similar violation. It is THAT rare that someone calls in a complaint. I truly think that the city employee felt bad for me. She told me if I opened back up, I would face a fine of $90 to $500 plus court costs. I am absolutely stunned that someone would do this. Obviously, my sale benefited me but it was a help to so many others as it allowed them to stretch their dollar just a bit farther. I hope none of you have to deal with something so ridiculous. It's hard to speculate on why someone would call and complain. I really don't think it was a neighbor b/c they probably would have complained years ago. I tend to think it was just a random garage saler who stumbled upon my sale and had a bone-to-pick with what I was doing. I'm not sure where I am going to go from here...

Wow. Someone must have been really envious of your sale to be so mean spirited. I can imagine you are completely stunned. Do you have flea markets in your area where you can sell? I know it's not as convenient as selling in your own garage, but it might be a good outlet for one or two big sales a year? So sorry this happened to you!!

Do you have an email list of your regulars? You could do orders and have them come by individually to get their stuff. But you would need to keep inventory and price list updated. Check out the possibility of having it at another home location of a friend or somewhere, like a church community sale.

I had some doubts about the story so I looked at your city's laws. [opkansas.org] Turns out that this ordinance person was correct. Look under 5.44.026. You may want to consider the above mentioned tactics and/or holding your sale outside city limits. Just a thought.
