Thread Details

It's that time of year again when Garage sales are popular. I have seen some discussion of Garage Sales in regular discussion threads, and perhaps there is talk of it in the BS thread, but I think it would be good to have it's own thread and people can add in the WIKI what sold for them and at what price - or what they will sell it for.

This way people having a garage sale can have a nice reference sheet and can learn from the mistakes of others. I will post in the WIKI info I have read.

Yes, I am having a garage sale this weekend at a friends work. I have read some info on another site and it is nice that they have their own thread for this.

Garage sales are not for everyone, please no bashing on those who wish to do it. It's a way to make money to buy more coupons and fuel your 'addiction'. LOL!

Mods, if you think this would be better suited in a different forum, please advise or move. I just thought it would be good to have a garage sale discussion and a WIKI to boot to help others.

Thanks!

Vicki

PLEASE NOTE: This WIKI is a reference guide to price the items you may have. Know your states laws before selling new unopened items or medicine. Laws vary from state to state, and can from city to city on what is allowed to be sold at a garage sale or flea market. Sell at your own risk. Thanks!

Garage Sale Tips:
- Use a muffin tin to keep coin denominations separated.
- A fishing tackle box is a great way to keep money safe and organized - coins separated in the compartments, and bills underneath. Some even have locks
- Use a carpenter's apron with pockets in the front. Works great, bills and .5 and .10 on one side, .25 on the other. It goes with you, for safety and convenience. Works great for school concession stands too..

Prices here in the wiki show a range of prices SDers have gotten for each product/item.

*Please post what you sold items at in your individual post - and if you are in a big metropolis or not - this sometimes makes a difference.*

Hoping I might be able to get some input for those that have sold recently. I am doing my first "real" sale this weekend(vs just selling odds and ends with garage sale stuff), I have read through the wiki and a lot of the posts. I "think" my prices may be too high based on the Wiki prices, but it appears it was last updated Feb 2012 (unless I'm reading it wrong), so maybe prices have gone up since then. Here's what I am hoping for some input on:

-Bodywash (Men's Nivea/Dove)- Was thinking $3
-Men's Nivea Lotion (10oz I believe)/Jergens Ultra Healing lotion (10oz) $3
-Gillette Stylers-$10 Fusions/Proglides-$5
-Shave Gel (Nivea, Edge, Skintimate)- $2

What about the Glade Expressions Starter kits/refills? Do you tape them together as a pair (I'd think it would be hard to just sell the refill if all the starter kits sold out)

I appreciate any input anyone has! I hope it turns out to be a successful sale!

It all depends, on any give day as to what will sell, and at what price.
I have the Glade expressions starter kits at $1.50, refills at $1. I do not tape them together.
they sell but not super fast.
Good luck at your sale.

NJ/NY area: Can anyone donate some supplies/food, or water to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. A group of us are heading out to Queens to volunteer this Saturday. The area we are going to still has no power. The high-rise apartments are mostly occupied by senior citizens, who are hungry, cold, and without power. It would be greatly appreciated by all.

I know this is short notice, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. This will all be documented on video.

I have raised all of my men's body wash to $3 and it still sells steadily. The Fusions I have at $5 and they still go quickly. The Jergens 10oz I sell for $2.50 and I have the shave gels at $1.50, they went too slow for my liking at $2. HTHs!

HI! I do $3 on those brands of BW, $2 or $2.50 on Gillette, Irish Spring
Fusion I now sell for $6, sell slow, tho'.
Shave Gel, ok on the $2, but Edge maybe $1.50

I sold my Glade Expr starters at $2 and sold out. Left with refills at $1.50.
Your pricing would depend on how much you have, and if you're only selling for one weekend and no more till the Spring.
You may need to lower the Men's lotion to $2.50. I don't have any of that, but sell other brands at $2. Nivea is a higher end brand so you should get more.
Good Luck!

I think your prices are ok. My suggestion would be if you are having a 2 day sale, see how it goes the first day. If it's not moving as fast as you would like, multi-price them. Ex- Put the BW and Lotion at $3 or 2/$5 and the Shave gel (and any other $2 things you want to move) to $2 or 3/$5. I did the shave gel like that this past weekend at the FM and it sold really well. Men's usually sells good at $2, but the women's is usually a slow seller for me, so I was happy to get 3/$5 since it is the end of the season. Good luck with your sale!

THANK YOU so much for all the input! It's just one day, so sounds like I need to do a little modification with my prices or I may be stuck all winter. I typically don't buy to resell, but I have come up with so much and with winter coming up, I figure it is worth a shot! Thanks again!

I had a sale 2 weeks ago that did okay on Friday, but Saturday had an absolute cold snap come thru and didn't do so well. Because we are going to be in the upper 60s this Saturday, I'm going to try another one. I think it'll do well, but it is kinda past what would be considered "yard sale" time where I am.
Hope yours does better than mine.. only sold $90 including yard sale items.

Did you remember to ask for your rainchecks today?

I'm doing my last one of the season tomorrow. The last one was going to be 3 weeks ago, but I had enough left that I'd rather do another sale than haul it all back down to the basement. It'll be interesting to see how I do. So far, all of my sales have been within $150 of each other, no matter what the weather or kind of stock I had!

Well, you did great for one day!! Wow. Surprised at the Dentek. I get $2 each and it usually sells out. (I don't have tons, but sell out)
Herbal Ess is slow for alot of us. I DK why, but maybe its just that slender bottle that looks like it doesn't weigh much?? I price at $2, also. For last sale going to do multiple pricing, but $1 would pain me! Your shampoos were pretty cheap!
Good luck Saturday!
