When do you buy a game that could be a future collectible?

This is something I've been toying with over the last few years and I have had a mixed bag of luck. Quick forward; I collect games. I have about 700 games in my collection, mostly Xbox 360, but also including Xbox One, PS2 and PS3 with some random mixes of various Gameboys, a few Wii games, Xbox, Gamecube, and PC. Planning to pick up a Wii U at some point as well as a PS4.

As a result of knowing what I want, I've been keeping my eyes peeled for some good deals if that means picking up things before I buy a system. Part of my question surrounds my love for some of the big series (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, and various RPGs). Often times these games, especially Nintendo, seem to come down to a mid-range price and disappear to then become "collectible" status where you're paying new or higher prices for a used game.

When do you pull the trigger and buy some of these games? Typically I buy my games around the $10 mark. Whether that's from Craigslist, Gamefly, or Ebay, I rarely spend more than $20 unless it's a game I really want new. As a result of my hesitation to purchase these games, I am currently Zelda-less for my 3DS. I am wondering if this will happen with Xenoblade Chronicles X?

Basically special preorder edtions are more likely to go up in price but they also cost a lot more. Nintendo games goes go up in price because a lot of them end up being limited prints. Heck try to find a copy of lego city or pikman for the wii u.

I like to buy AAA Nintendo games with B2G1 free deals.

As for RPGs, I like JRPGs, but they're the worst for a bargain hunter.

For example:

I bought the Bravely Default Collector's Edition at release for MSRP. You'd be hard pressed to get the standard edition that cheap brand-new these days. But I also bought Shin Megami Tensei IV on release for MSRP. It's plentiful and cheap these days.

So, in answer to your question: I dunno when the best time to buy is Smilie

I should add that my collection has nothing to do with value. I just like having something to collect and enjoy video games. I am not looking to buy low and sell high. I am looking to buy low so I can buy more. Smilie God damn limited runs!! I regret getting rid of SNES games when I got rid of the system years ago. I had all sorts of good things that would cost me a fortune to get back. Luckily, there are emulators for that.

The best rule to follow is usually this:

If it has a "Greatest Hits", "Platinum Hits" or "Player's Choice" release, then usually it's not something that's going to be worth a whole heck of a lot price wise later on.

Although there are some games(usually 'niche' titles) that're weird or unusual and may end up becoming future collectibles. For example: Afrika and/or Catherine on the PS3

If anything though, you should keep an eye on grabbing the first run versions of games(i.e. non Platinum Hits, Greatest Hits, etc) since other collectors will want those later on for their 'gotta have all my games in the original cases' collections.

As for the collector's editions, special editions and limited editions, very VERY few of those are really worthy of those titles as many of them are far from 'special' OR 'limited'. Not to mention so many of them nowadays have digital items in them as opposed to physical dust collectors(see: Skyrim Collectors Edition with the Alduin cheap ass plastic piece of shit "statue") that you can proudly display to show your oddly high level of nerditude.

From my own experiences, he uses and abuses the sites he is a member of. He cares about no one but himself. If there's a deal ANYWHERE, he is the person to buy 100x of whatever it is to resell for profit, and usually get the deal pulled or canceled.

He lives near me. A couple years ago, he bought five copies of a game on clearance at target closest to me. Bragged about it here then soon found out the trade value wasn't worth a 'flip'. When I called him on it for being a scumbag for buying out the stock, he PM'ed me and told me he would now purposely return them to a target far away from me so I can't get a copy for myself.
Whine more, please.

Just pay attention to this site, then. I almost never buy a game at less than 40% off. Usually, it's more like 60% off. With Nintendo games, the best deals are often at launch, B2G1, or B1G1-40. With other devs, wait a year and find the complete edition for $10. Those won't be collectible, though.

I buy pretty much every game I can get my hands on. Some helpful info though. Guess I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for some B2G1 deals with WiiU in anticipation of getting the system sooner or later. I would like to complete my collection of all games for Xbox 360. I am shooting for every North American release, not including gimmick or sports games. I have a few gimmick games (by gimmick I mean guitar hero, skylanders, disney infinity, etc), but since I have no intention of playing those or buying extra pieces for them, I don't count them in my collection. I have been picking up a lot of kids games for my daughter to have something to play when she is a little older.

I have GCU which is how I'm buying most of my new games, but Gamefly is my go to for newer games. I try to avoid games with heavy future DLC, or I'll buy them, play them, and sell them in anticipation for a version with all DLC. Personally, I don't care about the value of buying a reprint or used. As long as it has a case and is in good shape, I add it to the collection.

Don't forget the Burger King games in that list of 360 titles. Wink They were actually pretty tolerable in short bursts for what was essentially supposed to be a fast food marketing gimmick.

I don't waste my time. Barely enough time to play games I do want to and have. For everything else there's emulators and hacks. Wii u can finally play game back ups. Ps4 and Xbox one hopefully on the next couple years

It was originally only by streaming the game from your computer to the wii u. Now it can read from SD cards.

Yeah, I knew about the streaming (which imo doesn't count) and I knew about SD card. I didn't know if you could rip to HDD yet like you can with Wii. SD cards fill up quickly. Thanks for update.

You can get a 128 GB or more SD card. Most of the Wii games are 5gb or less. Even with a 64 GB memory that's about 10 games at a time. I don't have time to keep 10 games active.

An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone
