I just signed up for the chase card. Not thrilled that you have to specifically activate your rewards each quarter. The only explanation for this is Chase catching people not paying attention so they don't have to give those people higher cash back. I hate stuff like that.

does anyone here, (non business owners) spend $500 a month in gas? $1500 in 3mo?

do people usually buy gas cards for these instead of just pumping to get more out of cashback?

I agree. It is also possible (though I haven't confirmed this) that there is a limit to the number of cardholder that the promo will support. I know that some of the Amex deals are that way, but I've never heard anyone denied a Chase or Discover deal.

...but yes, the easy explanation is that they get to benefit from advertising the discount, but some percentage of people will forget to invoke the deal.

True. Its even easier now that they have an app for it. Now its just an easy app button push. its only 4 times a year to worry about it. An no matter what Sam L trys selling you. 5% is way better then 1.5%

Wow if I got denied because too many people were already signed up for rewards before me I'd be pretty unhappy.

It's not that it's difficult, it's that the only explanation for why a company would do this is so they don't have to pay out the rewards they advertise if someone happens to forget to activate them. Just a BS business practice.
