I got this new 4k TV now connected to my laptop with hdmi out.Want to see some genuine non youtube 4k videos.
I also got netflix plan as well. Please advise which ones and how do I verify if 4k videos are playing properly.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Can your laptop handle 4k?

On Netflix, search for "4K" or "UHD". Also, see this site [4k.com].

You need the higher level Netflix plan (I think the $11 not $8 plan) to get 4k. There might be some 4k sample videos you can download and plugin a USB stick.

There is also ultrafix which is 4k video rentals.

You most likely want to check this site out on where to find 4k videos (also good for celebration settings)

  • Make sure your laptop supports 4K
  • Make sure your HDMI cable supports 4K
    • At least HDMI 1.4 for 4K at 30 FPS
    • HDMI 2.0 would be ideal

Version 2.0 (like 1.4 before it) is entirely a hardware change. It is not a cable change. You can expect cable manufacturers to proclaim that you need expensive new "Version 2.0 cables" but this is untrue. Your current High Speed cables should work just fine.

I hedge with "should" as if the cable isn't fully up to the High Speed spec, it might not work. In this case, you might get dropouts or sparkles (as discussed in this article). If you do, a different but not more expensive HDMI cable should work just fine.

It's worth mentioning, again, that 4K HDMI cables are nonsense.

Hello everyone. thanks so much for your wonderful responses. is there any utility to verify that 4k content is played and not downsized? basically how do we really know 4k is playing and not 1080p or such lower resolution? any software or hardware ideas for such verification?

On most monitors and TV's there's an option to display to operating resolution. On many tv's it simply displays the resolution below the video input for a few seconds.

When you're driving it off a computer, you can trust the resolution your computer shows for that screen.
