This is the first time I got this error on a WD drive out of the box.. Glad I didn't start using it right away.

Would recommend everyone to use the WD's tool to check if your drive is okay.

My Book is not good. You cant connect it to anytihing other than to a physical machine(win or mac). I have tried to connect it to my router USB, it didnt work(research told me that it cant be used for NAS kind of setup). Dont tell me that you need to get mycloud disk, I know that but its expensive than my book. So, dont fall for mybook if you had NAS/personal clooud thoughts.

Update: It did work with USB 2.0 connector.

This will have a green drive inside and the data is not recoverable if the enclosure fails. No thanks.

Some of us will rip that green drive right out of the enclosure...run WDIDLE to set the idle timeout to 5 minutes and use it in a nas. Fry's has the same drive for $99 today with the use of their Friday promo code...was able to order one at 7amest but I think it's in store only now.

I was thinking about picking this just to do that, plug it into my routers usb. Is there a particular reason why this WD doesn't work in that manner? I thought any external drive could basically be hooked up to a routers usb.

You absolutely can. Don't worry about one user who wasn't able to figure it out.

I have a router running tomato (alternative firmware similar to dd-wrt but more user friendly) and I can hookup whatever drive or flashdrive I want without issue. At one point I had a couple hooked up via a hub but keep in mind most routers are usb 2.0 which gets slow when dealing with large HD's. I'm not aware of any particular issue that would prevent you from using a mybook with a router.

If there's a way to know it's a red drive from the outside packaging I would be all over it and use them in my Synology, lol
