home security: time warner vs buying cameras

i've been wanting to setup some cameras around my house, specifically on the front and back door (plus maybe the garage area)

right now time warner has a $200 visa promo, so for two cameras installed I'd be looking at around $125 plus taxes, then around $35 a month for the service.

Now I know I could buy my own cameras and in the long run save a lot of money, but the problem is

a) I don't know what to buy
b) more important: I'd have to install them myself or pay some one to install them

since the time warner equipment is mine to keep (not rented) it might be worth paying the monthly fee for a year or so, because they'll actually wire them into the power (instead of running a bunch of extension cord which is exactly what I would do).

what do you think? is there any equipment retailers that will also do the install? another thing i like about the time warner is that it has battery and cellular backup, which is awesome if the bastards decide to cut my power before they break in. do any self-purchased equipment providers do that?

a big downside tho is the cameras seem pretty low end (640x480)...

i don't really know too much about this stuff, but I do know I want security to be able to catch the bastards, so any insight would be appreciated.

You might want to get more details on the camera installation. There were deals on some nice IP camera's and I feel there will be more down the line.

Have you looked into Kuna? Replaces your outdoor light, and great quality. Two weeks ago I caught someone stealing packages from my mailbox and Kuna caught everything on video. Only downside is if your Internet is shitty Kuna will go down. It will alert you but can't record then.

Look into Smartthings Hub by Samsung....add as many cameras and other security features as you want. See YouTube, buy from Best Buy or Home Depot.
