value of Sam's club membership?

I used the AMEX offer to get Sam's Club membership. But my trip to Sam's Club was very disappointing. Most merchandises are just Walmart stuff with a larger size and higher per unit price (why?).

Right now Sam's Club gas is 3c cheaper than Walmart & Walmart competitors (HEB in Texas). Some credit card cashback programs excludes gas from membership markets (for AMEX BCE I get only 1% for Sam's Club gas while 2% for HEB gas)

The bakery has a good selection. That's the only good thing I can say about it. For the most part stuff in Sam's Club is not any cheaper than non-membership competitors (Walmart, HEB, Target, Big Lots, Lowes etc.).

And the service isn't that great. Checkout line gets so long and they do not give out bags....

So what is Sam's Club good for?

I’m not convinced that the “clubs” are a deal unless you’re a really large family, use the pharmacy, or are a business.

My parents have a Costco membership mainly due to the pharmacy. They at least make their membership back in savings there. Then, since they have the membership, there is other stuff that they buy and I go along with them every now and then to get stuff.

But for the most part, I’d be better off shopping elsewhere because I’d never make back enough in savings to cover my membership fee.

we utilize SAMs for diapers since we prefer huggies. if it wasnt for that I'm not sure we'd get enough of a value out of it.

The main items I buy are cat litter, dog food - wet and dry. For fresh foods: broccoli, mushrooms, salad mix, swiss cheese slices, Feta cheese, craisins, ciabatta rolls. croissants. I also buy the hamburger meat, eye of round roasts, boneless pork chops. The chicken breasts are about the same as a grocery store, but I like having a big bag on hand. I'll get gas there, and pick up a box of the pre-wrapped lens and screen cleaners when I run out. It is nice when you are having parties for paper goods and food selections. It sounds like you already price check, and that's where you have to be careful. I've had my membership 10 years or so, I think mainly the pet foods and supplies, cheeses, and meat make it worth it to me, but I live in the boondocks, and only have Walmart and Brookshire Brothers to choose from for groceries. I look forward to any other responses you get to this, maybe I am missing some deals or need to reconsider my membership Smilie

I had a 3 month or so trial membership a while ago. I went there maybe once or twice during that three months. If you have a large household that's constantly running outta essentials and can justify buying in bulk then it might be a good deal.

But for my family it was definitely not worth it to re-up after the trial was done.

It's also the same reason Amazon Prime isn't worth it to us. We prefer to get our stuff the same day and since Amazon charges sales tax in PA now it's the same difference if we go to Best Buy or shop on Amazon.
