How come my new Dell sucks soooo bad (and can i do anything about it)?

floete 547 75 December 31, 2015 at 04:22 AM
So, my old laptop was stolen from my car last monday. foury-year-old Dell Inspiron 3521, with 2nd gen i5 3337U processor, 8 gb ram, and an Evo ssd -- all that was in it, along with most of my life, but at least the bastids didn't take my sleeping, unthreatening dog.
i just got a Dell Inspiron that cost MORE than my old computer and came with a new generation i3 5015U processor, 6 gb ram, and 1T hard drive.

And, man, is it slow. I expected it to be slow to open programs, boot up, etc, because of no SSD. But, I'm talking just about the internet now. Pages slow to load. Lots of laggy scrolling. A good bit of freezing. Just behaving like a terrible POS. wheely cursor thing constantly circling around, doing what I do not know. All of which, from my reading, has nothing to do with lack of SSD. Could it really be the difference in 2 gb RAM?

Processor specs on old PC slightly better than with new PC but not all that much better.

Man, I don't know if I can live with this thing.

The only alternative I can come up with is to buy a refurb 3521 on ebay for $280 and upgrade it with SSD. After doing that, price would be just slightly more than the $410 I spent on the junky new Dell. But I really hate going backwards in time like that.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

What model Inspiron did you get? Was it brand new? Have you contacted Dell?

The difference between 6 and 8gb ram won't matter for browsing the internet unless you have a ton of tabs open.
The lack of SSD will make a difference for sure but not loading pages.
You did buy a lower in system in pretty much all areas, some more than others.

The solution isn't to buy an expensive used 4 year old computer. You need to troubleshoot what is happening. I assume your running windows 10?

1) You could try a Refresh of the OS.
2) Is the internet working well? Do you get the speeds your paying for? Try wired instead of wireless.
3) Try a different browser.
4) See if things are better in safe mode.
5) Are a ton of programs running?
6) Are drivers updated?
7) Have you run the full dell diagnostics utility?

Vague questions receive vague answers . . . . . .

8) did you uninstall all the bloatware that Dell and others typically install? That can also be a big cause of slowdowns on a new machine.

Lack of SSD wouldn't explain the crappy internet, laggy scrolling, etc... though. Something's not right with the software. My first intuition would be the dell bloatware as well, but you're going to dig down into what's using CPU/RAM on your system.

If you open up the task manager and show processes from all users, is anything running and using a significant amount of CPU or memory that you wouldn't expect? Which AV did they include with your system, and does turning it off (going back to windows defender) improve things?

here's a link to the new Dell:

And yes it's new, not a refurb.

For whatever reason, this Dell came with no bloatware on it. It did have Norton but I got rid of that ASAP, so now I'm just using Windows Defender.

Everything updated itself when I first turned on the machine. I do not have any other programs running.

I will looking into the other questions and suggestion when i get a moment.

here's a link to the refurb 3521 (the model that got stolen) that's on ebay:

Could it be I have a defective modem in the new Dell? I just ran a speed test. Here are the results:

wireless download speed: 7.40 Mbps
WIRED download speed: 7.12 Mbps

In other words, speed is slower wired than not wired. And I know with my old computer, I got much faster speeds with wired. much faster.

well, okay, come to find out that the person i'm renting from (for the past two weeks) has only signed up for 7Mbps service, so that explains that. But it doesn't explain why the old laptop never experienced leg or freezing, etc, while the new one does. right now i'm using 2% of the CPU and yet the problem exists. memory is showing at 41%, with Chrome being the biggest user by far.
arggg!

Try another browser. W10 had some issues with Chrome when I first updated to W10.

also threw down for a dell latitude with 128 gb ssd and an i5 processor that beats my old i5. got it on the 50% off deal that's currently in Hot Deals. $350 or so.

Only thing is, it's a 13.5" screen and i've only ever used 15". I hope I like it but if i don't, i can always return it.

thanks again, all, for your input during this confusing time in me life.

Depends the resolution and what you do with it. IF your mobile the smaller screen will be nice.
