USB port is not working out of the box - refurbished

ms2000 1,314 32 January 1, 2016 at 02:44 PM
I bought a refurbished Lenovo from Staples

One of the USB port, the one that is most used, is not working

Can this be repaired easily?

What do you mean by "not working"? Will it charge a device? Is it not recognized by Windows? Do you receive error messages when plugging something into it but not when you plug that same device into a different port?

Nothing happens
If I look under my Computer, it is not there at all.

No error message is thrown out

Does the fix involve replacing the motherboard?

I'd probably return it, but it depends on the specs and what you paid.

It's probably not an easy/cheap fix (assuming your diagnosis is correct).

Which USB port is it? Is it on the back panel of your computer, or is it on the front?

If it's on the back, you'd need a new motherboard, which wouldn't be worth it.

If it's on the front, it's replaceable. Either the port itself is dead, or the connection on the motherboard is dead. It's mostly likely the port, but the easiest thing to check is to trace back the wiring to the motherboard and connect it to a different USB header. Check your manual for locations of USB headers on your motherboard.

If it's the port, you're going to need to get the special panel from Lenovo, because there really isn't a standard "front usb panel." I've had front USB ports die on me before, and I've been able to get the case manufacturer to send me a new front USB panel. How easy it is to replace depends a lot on your case, but it's probably going to be a bit of work.

If you want to keep the PC, and you don't want a project, I'd just write it off. If you need more USB ports get yourself a USB hub. If you do want a project and you want to keep the PC, it is fixable provided you can find the parts.

You haven't answered my questions. We can't help you if you don't give us the information we ask for.

Can you use the port to charge something?
You say that if you plug a device into the port, nothing happens. Does something happen if you plug the same device into a different port? The port right next to it?
What kind of devices have you tried?

Return it. If a full system restore doesn't resolve then it's a motherboard issue. You can go to the manufacturer's website and attempt t update the drivers but most likely it won't help.

I did - it turns out one Thumb drive works on the back USB port but not on the side
Other Thumb drive actually works on both! First USB drive is a fancy one and about 5 yrs old.
Making it tricky!

Thanks and repped.
