Reputation question

I've been here awhile but only started participating recently. I've given rep before but today I noticed the persons rep count didn't change. I went and looked at all the reps I'd given and they all have a gray spot next to them instead of green. So I guess I've never given anyone rep. Just gave another rep so I could see if maybe I had to tick a box or something but no, only thing I'm given is "I approve this post" and a box to write a comment.

Do I have to have a certain number of posts myself to give true rep or something?

Thanks

Hi Psy-Ko Smilie Users with less than 50 posts, the reps you give will not increase the rep points of whoever you're repping. They will see the comment you leave though. Once you have 50+ posts, then when you rep that will add rep points Smilie

You can read the FAQ here and this post here on rep points Smilie

Thank you so much! I'll be at 50 posts in no time. I just needed to get into it and a couple contests/threads did that for me recently. Looking forward to many years here Smilie

Widgit (or anyone else) I hope you don't mind one more question about rep. I read the links you gave me and can find no explanation. I have now been here over a year, have over 50 posts and 60+ rep but I don't think the reps I'm giving are worth anything. At least nothing changed in the way it looks. Should it tell me point value of the rep I'm leaving or can I see it somhow? I really don't care about my rep, although it does make it easier to trade but I would like to show appreciation towards others when they help out.

Your last two reps given are positive, not neutral, so you seem to have just passed the threshold Smilie

Now that you are above 50 posts, all reps you give now will count towards other SDers rep totals. The exact amount for each positive you give ranges from +1 to +4.

IIRC, you start at +1 and value increases +1 for every year you've been on SD. So since you joined in 2014, each positive rep you give will be +2 to the person you give it to. Hope this helps

How do you know this? I couldn't find anywhere that told me. There must be somewhere I can see rep I've given but I can't find it. Thanks for helping!

Yeah I knew that was how it was supposed to work, just expected it would say I how many points I was leaving or at least tell me I was leaving pos rep. Looks exactly the same as it did before i hit 50

It won't say how many points you give, but you should now be able to see the user's rep count increase by x amount of reps after you repped them.

And to see the reps you've given or received, you can go to your profile page and click on 'Reputation' on the left hand side. You can see reps you've gotten and reps you've given out there. Reps with a little green box in front of them are 'positive' reps aka those that do increase rep count. Those that are grey are ones from users that don't have 50+ posts yet, or are the ones you gave out before you had 50 posts.

Go to your profile, then click "Reputation" in the sidebar, then the "Reputation Given" tab so see your history.
