Apple TV or Roku 4?

halliwellfamily 1,707 288 January 3, 2016 at 06:15 AM
Hubby bought me an Apple TV for Christmas but I haven't opened it yet. I'm not one of those people who buy a lot of movies or music (in apple or any place really). I was looking at getting the Roku 4 instead....looking for opinions please.

hi, i moved your thread to tech support, as you might get better help there. also, it might help if you described the sort of things that you hope to be able to do with it Smilie.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer then Apple TV. It will mirror your device, allowing you to use all the 1,000,000+ apps in the store to be shown on the TV. It also mirrors your computer, so the entire internet can be displayed on your TV.

If you don't use Apple products, then Roku is more appealing. It has a ton of free options to watch (though I've found most of the free options don't have much better production values than PBS). And it has some more options than Apple TV. Last I check Apple TV only had about 40 options of streaming services. Roku has 100's.

An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

Do you subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu+?

Other devices you own are significant. I believe Apple TV doesn't support Amazon Prime Video or Google Play Video. The Apple TV is the only device that can access content from the iTunes store.

Personally I like the Roku 4 better, but I haven't spent much time with the new Apple TV.

Apple TV: All you watch is from Itunes. You love apple and have apple devices.

Roku 4: You watch/steam/buy from different places and you absolutely must have 4K content for your new 4K TV. Note: there is an audible fan on roku 4 to cool the device to play 4K content.

Roku 3: You watch/steam/buy from different places and you don't care about 4K at all.

Describe your desired usage scenarios and we will recommend the perfect device. Personally I would also be looking at an AndroidTV, either Nvidia Shield or Nexus or some other device. Only downside I can see is that AndroidTV doesn't have the amazon streaming app right now.

The Roku is nice, but like all devices it's not without it's negs. I find its inability to play back a host of file types on thumb drives massively annoying and the Roku 3, can't comment on 4, is slow compared to just about every other device I've used. That being said if you must have streaming prime access I would say it's a good choice.
