WMC working on Windows 10, with some legwork

Guess this has been around since September but didn't see anyone that posted here and I know we have a quite a few members that use some type of tuner. I was looking for a free WMC key for Windows 8.1 on a new HTPC build and stumbled across this.

Get Windows Media Center Running on Windows 10 in a Few Easy Steps [lifehacker.com]

Here's how to do it:

- Download the WindowsMediaCenter_10.0.10134.0v2.1.rar file here. Most recent below
- Then, with 7-Zip, extract the folder to your main system drive and open it.
- Right-click on the file _TestRights.cmd and select Run as administrator.
- Then right-click on the file Installer.cmd and select Run as administrator. Press any key to exit the installer when it's finished.

Make a quick Windows search for Media Center and it will be your top match, but you can also find it under Window Accessories in the Start menu. You should be able to run WMC normally from there.
Latest version here [mega.nz]. Read the 'Readme', it is helpful and shows what to edit to ensure you get guide listings.

After some minor issues I have it up and running including HBO and Showtime. There may or not be issues with OTA turners based on a few comments, I'm using a HDHomerun Prime.

NOTE:
As of this posting, extenders are not working with WMC in Windows 10.

Not for the faint of heart. Updates could easily break this and there could be all kinds of other issues. Since I was doing a new build and didn't want to pay for WMC on 8.1 (doesn't seem like MSFT even offers it anymore) I figured this was worth a try. But I do have a backup HTPC with W7 if this becomes permanently broken. Figured there might be a few here that would like to give it a try.

Yes this can be frustrating, just when you think you have everything is working perfectly an update somewhere breaks it.

Exactly. I've had it up and running the last few days with no issues whatsoever. Seems to be as stable as my Windows 7 HTPC. Records as expected and everything. But MSFT could kick out an update that breaks everything tomorrow...

Did you do some digging in the mydigitalonline link in the OP?

Seems there may be some differences between Home and Pro for the install. I am running 10 Pro, I'm assuming you are on Home seeing as it is a laptop. I found this quote:

First, I installed WMC on a clean install of Windows 10. While it is not mandatory, I strongly recommend using the Pro version over the Home version because of the need to add NETWORK SERVICES to administrators group. I've tried the recommended tip using the command line to insert it into the Home version without any success. I have to note here that my knowledge of using command line is very limited. It was easier for me to navigate to the group policy on the Pro version and add it from there. After adding that, all recordings occurred even when the HTPC was in sleep mode. May be adding NETWORK SERVICES can be done automatically while installing WMC in a future release. I also appreciate the option to have many languages available. I am very happy with the ability to move to Windows 10 and keeping WMC. Again, thanks for the good work!

I'm running Home and couldn't get the NETWORK SERVICES tab to work, but with the directions in the WORKAROUNDS file, it was a breeze to just copy each line and paste it into the command prompt. Worked like a charm.
Might be worth looking into. There is a lot of information in that thread, but it takes a while to sift thru it. I'd like to know if you get it working as I was going to try and install on my dad's laptop with 10 Home, but it will probably be a while before I get around to trying.

I'm running Windows 10 Home. Recording and DRM all 100% Mydigitalife website is the place to go for solid info and also offer some other very cool info. You have to sign up but well worth it.

Mine is working rock solid and the latest release fixes the play ready issue. They have not solved the issue with Windows Media Extender last I looked so now looking to jump on some small boxes and just run 10.

I read that that extenders weren't working also, suppose I should add it to the OP also.

Glad to hear it is working on Home. Did you have to make any changes in the Network Services per the post above?

No changes were needed with the latest package. The best piece of advice I can offer is do not try and redownload the play ready from Microsoft as that will break the entire thing. I also had issue with my cable provider (cablevisionEEK! ) that changed the channel lineup. I actually brought this up in the mydigitalife forum.
