Been waiting for a 12" sub to buy for my Pop. He previously had an Athena sub that just died for no apparent reason. Reading the reviews on this is one is making me nervous. Good price but I'd hate for another one to die on us!

What reviews are those? Most reviews I've read said response drops significantly under 30Hz. But for this price range, I don't see any other subs that might be worthy contenders.

Klipsch 400W 12" reference speakers (sold at Fry's retail stores for $200 occasionally) is a better choice, but no Fry's near me. Frown

Klipsch Sub-12 and this polk sub are the best $200 subs available

The best price for this sub was $150, may be year 1 or 2 ago

$169 is a great price for this sub

Ive had this as an extra sub in my setup for a few years and provides nice thump for the $$$.

I see a few saying it died and the amp was to blame. And that's the same probably he had with his current sub. Plus it seems that it doesn't use the Bash amp the earlier version used. I have a BIC F12 sub and I love it, I would get that for him but I want to try something new. Maybe I'll just give it a shot!

Ah. Well a small few is expected (especially because people are more likely to give bad reviews than good). It's not as frequent as the JBL ES250P at least!

I have Athena AS-P400 and still going strong, best sub I ever had, AS-F2, AS-C1 (bought open box from Best Buy in 2005 for $300). This sub goes from 23Hz and above.

Definitely... I can agree with that. Plus it has a 3 year warranty, I'll give it shot. Thanks!

He has the AS-P6000, and I agree it's an amazing sub. But it died for no reason and reading through a bunch of forums that was a common problem. He actually has the same speakers plus the bookshelves. I got them from Best Buy when I worked there, they are awesome speakers.

Your local electronics shop can probably fix it for less than this sub costs. Probably a bad capacitor or power supply. Athena is worth fixing and would have better resale value even with the repair. Heck you could have them upgrade the capacitors making it even better Smilie

At this price range surprised that no one mentioned the Dayton 1200. I got one over the holidays and very happy with the purchase.

Wow. I had an Athena AS-P6000 die on me also. I replaced it with this sub 2 or 3 years ago. I also rock Athena AS-F2s and the AS-C1. Next time I buy speakers I am not doing dual 8s on the fronts. 6.5s is better for me.

How does this compare to the JBL deal?
