Interesting. Seems pretty basic, setting up the Pi being the trickiest part, which isn't really a requirement as the thing (just a monitor, really) could be run by just about anything with a video out signal. What is the practical use for such a thing? the monitor is $200 alone, add the "mirror", the Pi and some misc and you're at $300+ for a mirror that tells you the time and weather.

Agreed it's a bit pricey. I've seen pics of people doing the same with a TV in a bathroom before (in most cases just using it as a tv). A tablet could work too some software modification required, but you'd want to cover up the camera. Putting a hidden camera in a bathroom is a bad idea.

When I first saw this (and the geek in me) thought cool project - then I had the same thoughts as you, all this $$ and time to get a mirror to display the same thing any smartphone screensaver shows?? Now if you could get sports/traffic/stock tickers running on the bottom - then it might be useful

That would be the easy part - he's using Chromium in kiosk mode and a web page but it would be so much easier to use something like i3 as a desktop environment and either use i3blocks to display time/date/stocks/sports or send it all through conky

To me this is a project that should be reserved for old hardware (tv, monitor, tablet) that would otherwise be retired.

seems overkill to have the monitor the same size at the mirror and then have most of it display black and hide itself - wonder why not use a larger mirror and a smaller monitor, such that the monitor is only like the top fourth of the mirror

I think the presence of the screen would be obvious then. At least this way the background is all black and the same level.

The idea is neat but it would be expensive to make.

Side note, Why can't the guy rotate the pictures on his website?

Not necessarily, if it's on the edges of the screen might show. Generally keeping the space behind the mirror dark would be more important. I've seen other pictures / videos of this being down with to conceal a tv that didn't fill the mirror. In the pictures, you couldn't see it when it was off but I don't know what you'd see in person.

Would be cool to put it in a medicine cabinet and use just the top/bottom part of the screen and be able to use voice commands to control it
