Looking for replacement remote for receiver (cheap!)

I have a Pioneer vsx-321. I tried looking for a remote, it seems the original is selling for $30-40 on ebay. I'm looking for something cheaper. Will your standard universal work? or does it need special commands for a receiver?

My 2ยข, pick up a Logitech Harmony 650 the next time it's on sale for ~$50 (currently $65).

A standard universal will probably work ok, but there will be certain functions on the original remote that aren't available. Your basic power, volume, mute, and input shouldn't be too hard to get working. Read the manuals online before you buy. If the original functions at all, you could get a cheap learning universal remote to program important special functions. The cheapest learning remotes I'm finding are around $18.

If you have any old UEI cable box remotes lying around (comcast/twc) they are quite versatile if you have the patience. Certain versions can actually be hooked to a computer and programmed to control almost anything via ir. http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/ http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/

All depends on the functionality you want.

I have 4 HDMI and audio, etc, running to mine, with different modes, etc - I'd go crazy if I had to step down to a universal.

No nothing fancy. Just want to be able to switch inputs and change volume. I lost the original remote. I actually hated it. Sometimes if you put it down too hard on its face it would activate a button and switch some setting and the sound would stop in the middle of a movie or game and I'd have to figure out what happened

There are apps in the GooglePlay store for Pioneer receivers.

If the receiver doesn't have WiFi how will I control it?

If it has an ethernet connection, then hook it up to your home network by wire if possible and use the phone app. Otherwise, there are universal remotes around. You just have to find one that works with your unit.
