stupid straight talk compatability question

msf 687 63 January 9, 2016 at 07:20 PM
I know almost nothing about cell phones so I am coming here for help. Big Grin

I want to buy a samsung s4 or s5 verizon unlocked phone.

my stupid question - will it work on straight talk? Or will there be some sort of hastle? *which there always seems to be for this sort of thing*

background - I live in the country, my only experience with cell phones are cheap tracfone and net10 ones. I know if I buy a phone from my local walmart it will work where I live. If I buy it from the city 1 hour over it will work there and not here, no signal. I made this mistake once.

It should work just fine. You will need to buy a Straight Talk SIM card and will probably need to manually edit your apn/mmsc settings to get data and mms working.

Tracfone, Net 10, Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Page Plus, Total Wireless, and Telcel America are all ultimately owned by America Movil though most of these are subsidiaries of TracFone. Each of these brands has plans that are a little different, but they share the same relatively poor customer service and sometimes broken computer systems. The app that shows how much airtime/data you have left may not work correctly on a BYOD phone (but the phones you'll get this way are MUCH better).

MVNO's like tracfone use other carriers networks eg. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint. Different tracfone brands use different carriers or combinations of carriers. Your location determines what they sell in your area. BYOD on most TF brands is only AT&T & Verizon, but some brands like Simple Mobile are t-mobile iirc. BYOD is one of the more reliable ways to control what base carrier you end up on with tracfone brands.

You can often identify if a retail tracfone is GSM (AT&T/T-Mobile) or CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) from the packaging. GSM phones may have something like GSM-A or GSM-T on the box. CDMA tracfones usually have a red coverage map on the box and the model is likely to contain a "C". They usually sell whatever is cheapest for them in a particular market and has adequate coverage. You can also look up the phone models online to identify gsm/cdma.

If you're buying a used phone, http://swappa.com is a good option.

StraightTalk may not represent the best value for you. Other MVNO's, even other TracFone owned ones may be a better value.

How much do you use your phone per month?
Do you currently have StraightTalk?
How much are you paying per month?

TracFone gives all smart phones triple minutes so:
$199 gets you 1 year of service, 4500min/4500sms/4.5GB data to use through out the year (divided evenly 375 min/mo).
$99 gets you 1 year of service, 1200min/1200sms/1.2GB data to use through out the year (divided evenly 100 min/mo).

Red Pocket Mobile via eBay (choice of verizon, at&t, and sprint):
$199 gets you 1 year of service and 1000min/1000sms/1gb data (500mb high speed) every month
http://www.ebay.com/itm/131593551826

$200/12 = $16.67

Page Plus:
$30/mo gets you 1500min/unlimited sms/1gb of data (better deal than $30 plan on straight talk).
